I have read a few threads here that touch lightly on health effects of CRT vs LCD monitors. But other than general statements, there has been no real indepth disscussion on the subject. Any experts out there... either professional or experienced?

I have been plagued with headaches latley and my eyes seem to be getting worse. I spend around 5-7 hrs a day in front of a 15" CRT monitor. When I am away the seem to go away. Monitor is @ 85Hz.
Thoughts?

That happens to me also after a couple of weeks, but then I just have to wear my glasses for like a day and I'm fine, maybe all you need are some glasses.

A LCD might be better, healthwise, the CRT is not really a problem, people sometimes talk about radiation, but it is not really an issue. The reason LCD might help is because of the refresh.

raising your refresh rate will help. 100hz is much more enjoyable. The lighting around your monitor is at 60 hz so at 85hz you will get a beat frequency of 25hz, which is low enough to drive your eyes insane. A 40hz beat frequency is less noticable.

Adjusting the brightness, contrast, and your position relative to the monitor can also help.

It isn't the refresh right, it is definitely the brightness/contrast.

I used to keep mine at around 70% for both on my CRT, and headaches started happening. Everyone told me to raise the refresh rate, I did, it did not help.

I now run the birghtness at 40% and the contrast as well. This absolutely fine for browsing. When I game it goes to 55% for both.

Save your eyes man, 40% is fine for me, and once you adjust to it(2 hours) you're only benefitting.

I agree that lowering the brightness/contrast is easier on the eyes as ive done it if I had bad headaches and still needed to be on the computer for a project. I dont know about the refresh rate but ide say go for it anyway just to try it.
