***EDITED*** now have 1gig ram, 500WPSU, 2 fans, but the BFG is still only getting 15-20 FPS!! I even turned off V-sync.

Ok so I was im BestBuy looking in the video card section and there wasn't one BFG 6800oc in sight. I said hey why not look behind all the other cards, maybe Ill get lucky. HAHA what do you know, some1 stuffed a BFG 6800OC back there!! So, I just bought it because I had nothing better to do that day.

I went home and I "hopefully" installed it correctly on my brothers comp ( the one im using now) Its a Amd XP 2200, stock, 1GB DDR 266 RAM, 500W Ultra X-Connect PSU. But we were on a Geforce FX 5600 before this, and we really had a tought time with CS SOURCE, I had to turn mat_bumpmap off, mat_specular off, as well as other variables I found to help in major need of an FPS boost. But still only got 20-30 fps max with the 5600.

I went to the nvidia website and downloaded the latest drivers for the BFG. I was very excited and started up CSS. Yet to my dissapointment, my FPS was HORRIBLE. I mean it was constant red, like 15-20fps, wayy choppy, and just overall so slow it was un-playable. The old 5600 was ugly with no eye candy, but at least it was playable. So I became very dissapointed and frustrated. I tried turning OFF all the eye candy, still unplayable fps with this 300$ card. I dont know what went wrong, so we tried uninstalling and reinstalling drivers for the 6800, but nothing. We were really clueless and dont know where to go from here, So I gave up, I dont think the card was bad, I just think I need to install something, or tweak something, cause this card should get at least 60fps with everything turned up and be playable right out of the box, right?? I know its not the CPU and RAM, since its decent for now. We reinstalled his FX5600, and WTF, the card now gets 35-55 FPS with the same old no eye candy settings!! We are so confused, his crappy card is so smooth now, even thought everthing is turned off, , but I mean, how come his card got all "super" and the BFG is pfffffft, crapola.

Im debating what to do with the card, possibly 9800pro, but the card will be for my new A64 s939 system, and 9800pro is pretty out-dated, I wanted the new 6800. if you guys have any idea on how I can correct this, im not sure what is wrong, maybe some software is missing and needs tweaking. I was hoping to unlock the 16 pipes with this, but I might return it!

Your power supply is the reason, it is too weak. You need some power try antecs tru430, it is what i have and it rocks. You can get it at bestbuy too, but rather expensive there.

Did you completely remove the old drivers w/ drivercleaner or someother utility? Also may have to reinstall the game you are trying to play. Also that whole computer will be bottle necking that poor video card. I would also get a bigger psu than 300watt.

I have the same card and it runs flawless. I also got lucky and can unlock to 16x1,6vp.

I had some problems too, very bad lag and such (using a 350 watt cheepo power supply) but after i unplugged my extra cd-r drive, it seemed to work alot better. Guess i should be getting a new PSU soon... but i need money for hl2!!! *sobs*

Yeah, with an 6800 you need a good quality 480+ watt PSU ideally. If you can afford one, PC Power & Cooling is the way to go! :santa2:

I'm really interested in those Power supplies that you can add molex connectors to it if you need it... expandabilty! also, if you check on the BFG 6800oc box, they call the molex connector a "Power Dongle", i hope this is another name for a molex connector, cause it gave me a nice laugh for awhile

hahah, no I live in VA. Anyways, I tried vsync off. And my bro just ordered the Ultra X-Connect PSU as well as a fan. So once that arrives, I guess I'll try the card again.

I promise you mate.
That card rocks!! I have the BFG 6800 Ultra 256MB GDDR3, and it's amazing!! =)
I also have a 520W power supply, and you need a minimum of 480W, what's what it says in the minimum system requirements. I've heard of though, people who has weaker PSU's, and still get the card to run flawlessly, but adviceable, get a 480W minimum, and you'll see that this card is absolutely amazing! =)

GOOD LUCK TO YOU MATE!! =)
Warmest regards,
Tor Erik

But, would an insufficient power supply cause crashes and messed up graphics?

Slowness probably isn't power supply related, AFAIK. IMO, slowness problems are usually caused by driver issues.

Get the Forton 530 at only about 77 buck. This baby is stable as a rock.

Have you tried setting your agp aperture size to 256 in your mobo bios? This makes Nalu happy on my computer :)

i have a Enermax 350 watt, and it wasnt enough for "my" 6800nu. i bought a 480w Antec true power to get it stable. however i think my 350 watter might have done the job if i wasnt overclocking the CPU. might have ;)

a 470w should be enough for any ATi card imo. long as its not a generic pos. my generic pos 480w wouldn't run squat good, weak a$$ 12v rail. 21amp if i remember right, and that aint enough ! even my Enermax 350w has "26" amps on the 12v rail ... and that wasnt enough either :bang head

Ok guys, I purchased a 500W Ultra X-Connect PSU along with another 512 of ram, totaling 1gb and tried installing the BFG 6800oc again. But its still the same!! no more than 25 fps in CSS. I deleted all the old drivers again and reinstalled them from nvidia.com But the card wont get more than 25 fps! Vertical Syn is also off. I am fresh out of ideas and don't know what is wrong with this video card!! What am I doing wrong, I know I should at least get 60fps out of the box with no tweaks. I really need some help.. . ..

o geez... here i was (with an antex true380) thinking it was only a 50 dollar difference on deciding between a 6600gt and a 6800nu-pipeunlock-gamble... but nooooooo....

I need another PSU?? dang! :(

my 6800 GT ran flawlessly OC'ed on a cheapo Allied 400w PSU($35). I had 2 hard drives, 1 80mm and 1 120 mm fan running, a dvd burner, and the vid card. but i upgraded since and now my rails are even worse surprisingly...

thats so strange how some people can run an overclocked CPU along with a 6800 using a generic low power supply. i had a Enermax 365 26a 12v, and it wouldnt run my mobile along with my 6800. christ i only had one HD, and one optical. you would think it would do the job, but it didnt ! had to go bigger :-/

let me get this right..so you are saying that if you put the settings about the same on both cards then they perform about the same? Or no matter what the 5600 is performing better. If they are performing the same then the problem seems to be a bottleck somewhere else. Personaly I would have never added more pc2100. I would have replaced it with some better performing pc3200 or higher. Adding more ram that is slow doesn't help anything. A stick of good quality faster ram, will yeild far better results than a gig of slow ram. Again, I would pay close attention to the settings on both cards and their respective performance. If you make sure the settings are about the same, and they both perform the same, then I think you are dealing with a bottleneck somewhere else. My guess is the ram pc2100 at 266mhz is not going to get the job done on any of the newer games. The processor can be cranked up a bit now that you have a better PSU (provided you have adequate cooling), so I dont think that is the trouble. The bottom line, that 6800 should be a better card, but if you do a google search for the two cards, you will find alot of information that might have changed your decision. First the default clock speeds for your 6800oc are spec'ed at 350mhz on the gpu and 700mhz on the ram assuming the 5600 was an ultra the speeds are 350mhz and 700mhz respectively, which are yes, "Identical" to the 6800oc so you wont notice a speed difference. The graphics should have been better with it's increase shaders and pipes, but it's not really faster. If it wasn't an ultra then the 6800 might have been a bit faster, but again the bottelneck could be elswhere. My advice would be to do some more research on the card, (becasuse I have found all types of problems with that 6800oc in five minutes of google searching) and definitely put in some better ram in your rig to eliminate the memory from being a problem as you upgrade other things. I know this doesn't help you much now, but it is simply food for thought. Good luck and I hope you get things squared away...BTW Merry Xmas to you and everyone else!!!!!!!!

your CPU is likely to be a bottle neck for these newer games......
