Does anyone know if XP is backwards compatable with 98SE games? I would hate to not be able to use hundreds of dollars worth of games!

No DOS-based games. Or at least not all dos games...
basicly it plays any game that 2000 pro can cause there on the same nt platform.
That better not be true, Robb23. I was having problems with Diablo 2 and Vampire: The Masquerade - Redemption under 2K. Which is why I rolled back to 98. My understanding was that XP would have an "OS Emulator" that let you play any game that ran under any MS OS. But I could be wrong.
But there are two flavors of XP, Home and Pro. So I'm thinking Pro will be built on the NT platform, like 2K, but Home would be built on the 9X platform, like ME.
Can we buy these OSes now? I haven't seen them on anything but retail machines yet.

According to the MS Countdown, XP is still 42 days away. October 25, really. But there is XP Release Candidate 2 (Beta version) you can download from MS for $10. And it takes four hours at DSL speed. SO yes, you can use it, but it's the Beta version, which means all the functions might not be there or working properly, such as video game compatibility. But I don't know if it's the home or pro version, and I can't find it on Microsoft's page right now.
*EDIT: D'oh! You can download the beta of XP Professional here. (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/evaluation/trial/wpp/default.asp) But I didn't find anything about a beta for home. So I don't know how it will act.

yes its true.
the emulator part i dont know anything about. but a good rule is if it works with 2k it will work with XP.
and im pretty sure but not completly that there both nt based.
Well, XP is looking to be crap for me! But I guess the only way to tell for sure will be to get it when it comes out.

The word from Microsoft says that XP will be sporting an emulator may times better/more compaible than 2000's crappy one. In fact, they expect ALL 95/98 games to be playable (or at least a good portion until the Service Packs start hitting), and maybe even a good chunk of DOS games...
Still, Microsoft themselves rated XP as being only "very good" in the gaming realm as opposed to 98SE's "GREAT." They advised that that should change as XP matures (within a year basically).
So...they say if you're a gamer, and can do without the multimedia flashies that XP offers, wait a year and stick with your 98 kernel until then...

That's gonna be sweet then. The main thing I hate about WinME is no dos games thing. Someone had a patch to use the same Kernel that 98 uses for dos games, but I couldn't get it to work...

Wrong, they are both NT core based. And yes, it will run all games that 2k does, maybe with a few exeptions.

What would an exception be?

That'll suck. I found 2K to be crap for games. At least the ones I wanted to use. That's why I rolled back to 98. I hope they get some better compatibility updates made.
