View Full Version : Wiring on a compressor???

After many months of contemplating, i have decided to enter into the world of extreme cooling. I've decide to build myself a decent waterchiller, so i've gone out and bought myself a brand new compressor, the only problem is that it comes with no wiring instructions on the copressor  it's got a connector for positive and negative and ground, but its also got 2 or 3 other conectors as well, i know that these are probably for a thermostat. What i need to find out is if i need to bridge these other connectors to get the compressor to run or can i leave them un-connected?
Thanks

There should be a wiring diagram on the compressor somewhere. Could you post a picture of that, or at least tell us what model the compressor is.
Thanks.

The only wiring diagram is the one on the plastic cover that covers the wiring but it's extremely vague. I'm at work at the mo so i can't remember off hand what compressor name is, but i will post pics tomorrow.

What type of compressor is it? High/Mid/Low? R12/404A/134A? What size compressor? Semi Hermetic? What else are you using in the system? Are you going to use a TEV or Cap? What type of evap/HX are you thinking about using?
Are you sure the compressor came with all the required start/run components, such as overload, run cap, start cap if needed and relay?

I'm not sure how to answer all your questions but i can answer some of dem, it's a 134a 1hp compressor. I'm going to use a capillary tube, and i'm gonna make my own evaporator out of 1/4" copper piping coiled up.
what model the compressor is.
It's a aspera NB1118Z compressor.

I'm not quite sure i understand what all those things are, but yes, i think it did.

1HP?? Where did you just pick up a 1hp compressor from and not know if it had a start cap, run cap. Hell a compressor that big should even have a compressor pressure switch. All of my 1HP+ compressors are 208, but I guess there may be 110 ones. Your going to use 1/4inch copper for an evap on a 1hp compressor? You need to do some research before doing this. Is the compressor all sweat or does it have a service valve?
I just ran that model and that is a 1/4 semi hermetic compressor. Even though I would recommend using 5/16 or even 3/8 on the evap depending on how long your making it. The wiring on that compressor should have a thermal overload protection cap as well as a small start/run cap all mounted directly inside the electric box on the side of the compressor. They should push on to 3 prongs coming out of the compressor. It should be fairly easy to wire up, you will probably have 3 screws that you can mount wires too, 4 if there is a ground coming right off the compressor. Just mess around with it and see what works. I could tell you exactly how to wire it if you could get a pic.

South Africa my good man, thats where you get a compressor without knowing if it's got a start cap/run cap :) i would post the pics if i knew how, i click on insert image icon and it gives me http://.... what am i supposed to do with that, i cant copy-paste or anything.

Below the window where you type the text in, there is an "attach Files" box, where you can upload pictures and stuff. Just stick a picture on using that.
As for your giant compressor, I'm pretty sure you are going to want to use a real condensor on something that big.
You can also use www.cryo-laboratory.com/upload for pic hosting.
