p.s
My vid card is a ATi 9800 pro
and i might look for a decent sound card , but that doesnt really matter now.
go to cpu section
then set type to AMD
then core to Winchester
then socket type 939
and it should be there

so with adding the
AMD Athlon 64 3200+, 512KB L2 Cache, Socket 939 64-bit Processor - Retail
my total so far is 717.26 (without shipping) and i will still need case and just normal fans and such . Overclocking isnt my 100% goal right now iam just learning to build (this is my first). Is that a bad price for all this ?
No not at all, do you game at all? Because you might want to think about upping your ram to a gig.

plobby i dont game that much on the computer i leave that to PS2.
fyre, i picked that memory cause that is one of the manf that the MB site recommend.
Like i said before i dont need a computer to take over the world its more of a learning thing for me right now but at the same time i dont want any major bottlenecks. Will this memory effect me that much ?
I have that memroy...I mean its not but but its not great...Its just average pretty much like it say's. Once you see how fast your comp is and graphics wise you might want to start gaming. Thats why i started after i built this cause i saw the graphics and all.
Personally i would suggest upgrading the ram though. To like some nice low latency xms series or something.
For a sound card though i would suggest the Creative Labs Sound Blaster Audigy2 ZS which is really nice card.
1 GB memory is nowhere near a bottle neck. since you're just learning, look for a case with fans and at least a 420W PSU. i had a very similar setup when i built my first rig last spring. i found a cheap but sturdy case with a PSU and a couple fans for like 50 bucks. i bought a new case this fall, but that was cause i wanted to play so more with the insides and needed more room. u need a PSU with that much power cause your cpu is a power hog
I just built a very smiliar rig as my first too. (Check the sig) It cost me about 1600 I'd say. If your going to be gaming you need 2-2-2-5 rated ram. I have Corsair XMS Twin Series for dual chan that the mother board supports. Runs like a dream. For the PSU you will probably want a 530. I Got a fortron which I got a bad one at first which newegg replaced for free and I Got free overnight shipping. What kind of graphics card are you planning to get? And whats your budget?
For a sound card though i would suggest the Creative Labs Sound Blaster Audigy2 ZS which is really nice card.
Its also the last i saw 90-100 dollars...
You dont need a sound card if you dont want one. The intragrated audio on the mother board is great. its 8 chan and i dont even notice a differnce with my speakers. I dont have surround sound or anything but it all sounds the same to me with just two speakers/headphones. I Wouldnt worry too much on a sound card.

sweet thanks for all the help/suggestions. Yeah the case is the next thing that i want to look into. I want a window ! (never had one lol) The vid card is Ati 9800 pro im good with that for now. Sound yeah i am going to stay with integrated right now. My buget is tight so i dont want to spend money on things like sound and take away from performace.
Also on the settings when setting the drives , the a:\ CDRW and DVDRW are all secondary right and the HD jumper is primary ? Also will i have to call MS when i go to install the windowsXP that came with my compaq cause everything will be different ? I was going to tell them (if i have to) that something happend power surge and i have to replace most of the parts.
If you don't want to take away from performance... Get the 2-2-2-5 based ram. I honestly would just splurge an extra 30 bucks and get some XMS Series corsair ram and not the patriot stuff Capmuffin linked. I honestly dont knwo if its a good company but corsair has always been the main company i see posted about. The Antec Case I got has a window but a bit pricy. 120 bucks is what i paied for it and when they sent it it has shrink wrap on the sides which left sicky crap all over it and i had to call up Newegg which directed me to Antec which they were going ot redirect me to newegg becaue its newegg that modifys the case or something. But if you want a window I really like my case. ITs got cool blue LED's and has two 120mm fans. Very nice and quiet. It even has rubber stoppers that you place your harddrives on so it absorbes the sound when they rev up, I havnt even heard my Harddrive yet. If your going to get a DVDR get an NEC. I had thoes refered to me and its great. Its the same as a lite-on and much much better. As for the graphics card... I never have gone with ATI And I Was going to in the begnning... The internet cafe by me has thoes cards, They run ok compaired to my 6800GT but I Guess thats also because my card is a whole step higher. If I think of anything else.. il post it. Good luck with your build.

im just a little cnfused still when you say "2-2-2-5 based ram " What does that stand for ?
It's the rating of the ram, the latency I beleive. Im no expert but its kinda like your ping on the internet i would say. The lower the better.
All the 5 stands for if i remember right is the mother board port or channel. That doesnt matter. You just need 2-2-2-x based ram really.I was going to get the value ram, I probably would have regretted it. The ram I Got rules. I got it on ZipZoomFly.com so i dont know if its on newegg but give it a shot and look it up id do it but im trying to do german homework at the same time =P
Btw, when Im talking Ram Im talking about PC3200.

also it seems that alot of people get x2 512 sticks instead of just 1 stick of 1gig is there any advantage to that with using dual memory or no ?

Dual Channel setups get a 15% performance advantage.

i think that i asked that wrong. Ok the MB has 4 dimm slots. They are dual channel and i notice that alot of people fill 2 DIMM's with 512 sticks = using 2 sticks total but others which i almost never see are just a 1 gig stick inserted. So my question is if when having a MB that supports dual memory is it better to use 2x 512mb sticks or just 1x 1gig stick ? Is there a difference at all ?

yes there is, one 1 gig stick will not be dual channel first of all.
second 1 gig sticks are a premium in price.
third they do not perform as well.
EDIT: i would also recommend the patriot ram cap linked you.
you must buy this ram if you want to OC. Period, there is no if ands or buts.

I'm not sure what Tyrant is talking about but you don't absolutely have to have this ram in order to OC. You'd be able to OC with other types of ram.

Don't LL sticks of ram versus plain jane 2.5 3 3 8 sticks only have like a 2-3% performance advantage? Never seemed worth the extra cost to me. Maybe its different on the A64 platforms though, with their ondie memory controller.
Get two sticks though. Your motherboard or whatever has two memory controllers, they will work in unison for 'dual channel' mode. But you need to have one stick for each controller to take advantage of this however. (I don't think the technicals in that explaination are correct, since the A64 uses an ondie memory controller...but the principles are the same)
