curious to find out how overclocking/modding effects lifespan of card.

how long did it work before death?

what do you think was the reason it died?

The other day someone bought my 5700LE and killed it by oc'ing 300 MHZ. What an idiot.

No one knows how long a video card will last especially when overclocked but that overclock seems pretty mild and just as long as you keep the temperature down, you shouldn't have to worry about your video card dying. Hope that helps ease your mind.

at least my card refuses to artifact no matter what i do.but if i increase core speed by 5mhz 3DMark01 and the 3d window in ati tool will freeze.games run great though.
i actually have 2 profiles for use in very different room temperatures.

3dmark01 wont even run with my card when it's at the highest clock. I had to set it to lowest clock :(. Oh well, 3dmark05 will run and so will all my games :).

Umm ya, and what does this have to do with the thread topic of please post if your x800 died???

As for cards, I know someone that had 2 of his x800pro's die at stock XTPE speeds :( Of course it was a pro-xtpe conversion also.

My guess behind it is that the pro cores might beable to unlock them, but continually run at that speed for lengthy periods of time who knows. I bet any money its the core thats crapping out due to the pipes being enabled.

I've had my x800 pro flashed to the XT and running like that since August without any problems. I haven't pushed it past the XT speeds.

austinbmxnig your card is freezing at stock speeds?is the fan speed in ati tool set to at or near 100%?

I think austinbmxnig means when he's overclocking his card. X800's are known to just freeze up with no noticeable artifacting before it. Mine does it as well. But anyways, we should get back on topic...

i had mine @ 540 core / 560 memory i think - was working great - then one day i formated my system - installed Dx9c beta @ the time and i beleive cat 4.9 Beta;s = - suddenytl my card could not do over 500 with out issues - and yes trhis was a sudden - worked perfectly fine before the format - but as soon as i got into windows and drivers installed nothing but trouble - finally on stock speeds it ran then after a reboot - it died....

So, to me, no i did not kill it - darn dx 9 and cats 4,9 beta's did! (previous to the format i had in dx 9b and cats 4.8's.

You should have titled the thread "Post if you killed your x800 OCing" or something like that, the thread title implied X800's are just dropping dead...
OCing any component will shorten its life span, you have to decide if the cost of possible dead hardware is worth the small gains usually realized. On a mid-level card like the X800 Pro I would probably OC the thing as high as it would go because the life span of mid-level gear is usualy measured in time frames under 2 years at best. For a hi-end product that will still run solid 1-2 years after being bought I would OC lightly until year two then push hard to keep current with newer cards, but that's just me....
