is it bad to run ram out of spec? i have 2 256 pc2700 running in dual channel, so its good for 133 166 fasb, i could bring it up to 170 and its still in spec, but as soon as i go ver 179, sandra says its running out of spec, but if i ramp the bus up to 180, it still primes, but what if i give it somve volts from the bios, will that kinda knock it back in line? kinda like how you up your cpu speed, gets unstable, add some volts, are we talking the same thing here? heres the type of memory i have... smart modular, part number

thanks for anyhelp guys, i want i high fsb, but i cant afford to shell out the bux, i can hit 180 fsb, with a 12.5 multi wich gives me 2303mhz me thinks, it runs good, but i just dont trust it enough to leave on when im not around... temps are in the hi 30s low 40s, :santa:

If your ram is stable at 180, or for that matter, anything over that then thats ok. Sandra is telling you that the memory is out of spec simply because your frequency is higher than the default 166mhz.

That is one thing that annoys me about sandra. I run benchmarks, and it reports that my fsb is too high, my voltage is too high, my ram is out of spec, my motherboard temp is too high, and my psu temp is too high. I casually ignore it all. As far as I am concerned, out of spec is what I consider out of spec, not what sandra says :)
Don't pay attention to it, anything over what the chip is labeled will have it say it is "out of spec." Just like 26mph in a 25mph zone is speeding :)

thats cool, its funny, thats the only warning i have, and its telling me to up my fsb. i dunno, i was just worried that this memory wouldnt be able to handle it, but it ran prime for an hour, i think thats good enough, what do you think? the ram came from an hp a220n if that helps, 1 proggy says smart media, the other proggy says mushkin, but its green, and its not flimsy like some ddr ive felt. thanks for the reply guys!
oh, and is it true that if you oc your ram, its gonna burn out quicker? i mean, really, its only like a 14mhz oc on the fsb.. from 166x2 to 180x2?

OCing does decrease the life of memory...but we are talking marginal at most. Your ram might burn out after 9 years instead of 10. If you keep it that long, props to you :) That is unless you are using extreme voltages, which I don't think you are.
I think prime for an hour is ok, but some people argue that you need at least 24 hours. It is not smart media...that is a type of memory card...it is most likely mushkin if that is what the program says. Download CPUZ. Do a google search and it is a nifty little tool that will tell you about your memory. It is only a megabyte or two. Keep us posted with the OCing!
