Sudden ping time increase????

I am using a linksys router and a cable modem to connect to the internet. I log on to Gamespy Arcade to play Quake III. I connect to a game and start playing. Sometimes, after some time has passed, all of a sudden the ping time increases from say 75 milliseconds to 1200 milliseconds or more. This usually occurs during peak traffic times in the evening, but has been known to happen at other times as well.

Any ideas why?

There's a lot of variables involved... it's probably not your PC. I'd ask your service provider to monitor your subnet/connection during those times of the day and see if something may be overloading their system.
