View Full Version : Super Orb VS Generic HSs

I have met with a guy today whom I haven't seen for couple of months... He got 1GHz T-Bird with same mobo as mine and a Generic Cooler (pretty big 1 though) any way, my max temps with Super Orb are 57, his with the generic are 43, the Orb costs 4 times as much as the generic!!!
 I'm so mad at the guys who sold me the Orb (I didn't know it was a crappy HS then...)
I'll go to that store and buy the generic... another 13$ wasted but at least temps will be lower?

I could of told you the samething, look at my signature. Did you apply the generic thermal grease that came with the orb? That lowered temps a few degrees.

I had an orb untill this morning when I finally got my Global Win
my temp are great now 38C at idle 47C full load
With the orb i had high into the 60s and 70s.
My Case cooling takes 60CFM in and 60 CFM out....
and sound levels are good with a delta 40db!!!

Ive had the Orb, The Super Loud Orb they both are really not good unless its for your vid card then I think it is OK but I would say get some Arctic Silver 2(AS2) not to use that thermal grease unless its THE ONLY THING YOU HAVE but then I wouldn't overclock so much until my AS2 came in the mail do you have an AXIA tbird? then you got a good one for OC 1200-1500mhz with the right cooling , to get a good cooler they are about 30-40 dollars but thats only if you have AS2

thanx for your help with this,
how do I tell whether it is an AXIA chip?
I just got a delta today and just put it on excellent cooling, i even did the 7v mod to the delta and its still cool and quiet. with 12v it was still at full load around 47C.
On 7V it was exactly the same!!! just a hell of a lot quieter!!
thanx everyone

the whole design of the orb is limited, a huge chunk of metal over the hottest part and fins on the sides, Why?

I can only say, the whole Orb Design sucks. A friend of mine bought a Golden Orb for his Slot A, he changed back to his small generic hs, as it gave him 2-3 degrees lower temps.
So much to the "great" orbs performance
Super Orbs have 2 fans right? If the 2 fans do not produce exactly the same CFM when they are stacked then you will get a lower total CFM just because of wrong air pressure. The idea off the stacked fans won't really work. Try to sell that thing or buy a 120mm fan & use that to duct some cold air into the heatsink after you remove the stock fans.

to tell if its an "AXIA" you have to remove the heatsink and clean up the die a bit i expect, but it will have a load of letters and numbers i THINK its like the 2nd row down it has the stepping written on it, this will be something like: "AVIA" "AXIA" or "AHJYA" theres loads of others i expect, axia's are well knows for overclocking well. and AHJYA are even better or so i hear...
you may hear things like "AXIA Y" mentioned, the "Y" comes from the 1st letter/number of the row below where it says the stepping, i've heard that ones with a letter here overclock better.

I got this 'Stupid' (Super) Orb and I don't know how to remove it, I got a Green Cooler from a friend he says his temps with 1Gig T-bird never get beyond 43C and mine are at 57C!! I have no clue how to remove it without braking something...
Any one could suggest something please??? I gotta return the GC to the friend tommorow, so I'm in a hurry!

This generic cooler as I thought first is actually the Green Cooler, sorry.

What do u think would be better, the Super Noisy Orb or the more quiet 80x60x40mm with 60x60x20mm fan Green Cooler?
