View Full Version : No increase in frame rate after overclocking

I'd just upgraded my CPU to a AMD 1.33MHZ. I had overclocked to 1.4MHZ, 1.466MHZ, 1.485MHZ, and 1370MHZ to test the performance differences.

I'm running Q3 timedemo1 as a benchmark. Ran all OC setting 3 time to get an average frames per second. They all came out the same as the standard 1.33MHZ (10x133) setting.

I'm running MSI 32meg Gforce MX-400 video card.

Any suggestion on why I'm not getting better FPS when overclocked.

Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the Forums!! :) What kind of Motherboard?..memory? How much? DDR or SDR? Drivers your using? AGP 2X, 4X, Sideband or FastWrites? Are you overclocking your card? Are you sure you disabled VSync? Do all the previous terms sound like a foreign language?

Details, details...they're a pain but they make diagnosing the problem that much easier. Most of the latter AGP details can be found in your BIOS.

Could be a few things..The amount of physical memory you have in your box. Could just be the limit of the MX card. Really sounds like VSync though. You should at least see a 1 or 2 fps improvement w/ increased processor clock.

Welcome again to the forums.

Post your framerates as well. You'll be able to tell if it's because V-Sync is enabled if your framerates are near or matching your monitor's refresh rate.

this is simply because your MX is not powerful enough to feed your beastie 1.333 enough power!

vsnyc I would bet a tbird that is what it is the 2mx is kinda weak but I think if your frames are the same at different resolutions than that is your problem.

post your resolutions, mate. it's likely that q3 is the problem.

quake3 limits frame-rate on some copies by default. i also noticed that i was getting 90fps all the time when i overclocked my tbird and vid card. turns out quake3 was limiting the fps to 90. there's a command use must add to your main quake3 .cfg file to disable this option. see here (http://quake2.ukrpack.net/FAQ/con_commands_q3.shtml) for a list of console commands. look for the cl_maxfps command. try cg_maxfps is that one doesn't work.

hope that sorts your problem out. :)

i have the same problem in q3....the thing stays at 90fps
i have vsync turned off already and the card(elsa geforce2 pro 64mb ddr) is overclocked to 238/451

ok guys im gonna help you out with your Q3 framerate problem.you say you are only getting 90FPS? well i ahd that same problem..to fix this you need to go into your Q3 folder and look for a file called q3config.cfg. open it with notepad and do a search for FPS. it should bring you to MAx FPS 90.. change the value to 200 or whatever you want. i have mine set at 500 just to be safe.now remeber when you click the button to find FPS you only have to click it once as it will take you right where you need to be. that will fix your problem hope this helps you out..

ermm... posted that above, but thanks for clarification on which .cfg file it was.

If you are running at high resolution and high detail, then your MX 400 is the bottleneck. You can go to Athlon 1.9 Ghz and your framerate won't improve, much. Best way to bench CPU with Q3 is to run at low res, low detail. 640x480x16.

I can see differences in overclocks in Q3 always , on the fastest setting I get like 187fps , I believe the video card doesnt have as much to do with this as you think.

maybe you need to oc the video card to increase frame rate.
...just my opinion.
