Does having two cpu's mean you have to have 2 the same
could i have an AMD 64 fx55 and a p4 or does it have 2 be the same model or manufacturer

You will need 2 of the same SMP capable CPUs, FX55 or standard P4 won't work.
These are the current SMP capable CPUs
AMD Athlon MP
Intel Xeon
AMD Opteron

of course don't forget the mobile AMD xp's that work great on the asus a7m266-d and gigabyte boards (and i think a tyan board) without modding the chips...

and the p3 tualatin is still being sold i think

How could I have fogotten them, most of my systems are Dual Mobile Athlons.
Mobile XPs do work well in the Tyan 2466 and 2469, but no FSB overclocking.
