Witch do you think would be a better system?
P4 around 1.6 or a Dual PIII around a gig each
and you guys that have the dual cpu's do they really make a big diff. in the system ???
thanks :)

Dual motherboards really only utilise their full power in applications specially written for them, like server apps, and certain power-hungry graphics apps.
You would be far better off with a 1.4gig Athlon, which at less cost, will outperform a 1.6 P4. MHz is nothing - processing power is everything......
I would have suggest you consider what you plan to use your PC for, before you choose your processor(s)
Gaming - Athlon (P4 at a push)
Server/Apps - Dual PIII
or get a dual athlon MP system.

dont take this the wrong way as i have a celeron, but intel are crap, get a atherlon MP, the single processor is fast enough anyway, but dual wow

Ok everyone is saying that the AMD is better for gaming.
How about online gaming? I think it is more of networking
Thanks
It doesnīt matter if itīs online or offline gaming. The Athlon is better.
The networking part wonīt make any difference if itīs a P4, P3 or Athlon. When it comes to networking bandwidth, processing power doesnīt apply.
just wait a couple of months and get the 478 pin 2.2 ghz p4.

Are you set on intel also???

if the man can afford it he may as well get a higher quality cpu (amd fans feel freee to flame me)....a 2.2 ghz could crush a 1.4 athlon.........also the northwood core will increase performance....but if you only have like 200$ get an athlon....

If you ask me, AMD is definetly better. It's pricing is hard to beat, and so is its performance. Sure, a 2.0GHz PIV can beat an Athlon 1.4GHz, but a 1.4GHz PIV definetly can't beat it. With the advancements that will come with AMD, you can't go wrong.
I would much rather take QDR over SDR any day. Sure, it isn't out yet, but when will Intel utilize DDR at all in all their boards? Only now do PIV's have support for DDR memory, and if I'm not mistaken, only one board supports it. Others are limited to SDRam and RDRam, which it doesn't fully utilize. Doesn't necessarily leave you many options for overclocking or performance comparison does it?
My input is to go for AMD
Here's (http://www.overclockers.com/tips634/) an article on which I based some of my reasoning

Well yes and No on that matter. A better CPU can push you speed up by a good 400k. Also its very dependent on the ammount of Ram you tell it to use up in the system.ini but, your never going to get more then the ISP wants you to get. Hey Cap here is 2 megs. I get 4 lol

I am running w2k how can i tell it to use more of the ram??
get the dual p3 system!!!

Any news of the new P5s?

P5s? I thought p4s were the ones up at 3.5ghz

No there is no news on a p5 unless that was a typo and you meant the new p4's (northwood)

There isnt a dual AMD system that can even come close to touching dual PIII's.
And I've seen the benchmarks, the dual AMD system isn't impressing me.
Get the dual.

This gets to be a touchy area. You can't go wrong with the AMD, that much no one can deny; however what is the upgradability of a system with that chip and board. I mean I'm going through that righr now with the ASUS p4t becoming obsolete and I just bought it. I agree with the gentleman who suggested Northwood route (If you can afford it of course). It seems like whichever way you look you either face obsolescence or bankruptcy.

Yea for dual cpus, I think intel is still king. My brother has a dual 1 ghz xeon system with 800 mhz rdram at work. its pretty sweet.
he's still trying to convince his boss that he needs itanium power ;)
and RocknBull, intel owns my soul. I wont ever touch an amd chip but unlike some of the other members of oc.com i'm not about to post crap about amd, cyrix, or anyone else.
1ghz is fast no matter what name it says on the chip.

This is no type-o P5. I read about it in the Orb site.

Even the new Cyrix chips have thier place. Most of them can run without a heatsink now. I don't care how you cut it that is very impressive. I mean come on, we used to tank on Cyrix chips as being space heaters for a long time, but AMD is the new and improved space heater.
I think the most perfect place for a Cyrix chips is in MP3. When I get rid of this crappy Toyota Corolla and get another Grand Prix, I plan on making an MP3 player to mount in the trunk with swappable hard drives. Because of power consumption and heat problems here in Florida, you can't tell me that the new Cyrix wouldn't be perfect for this.....

actually i think cyrix should enter the notebook computer arena. my friend has a notebook with a p3 700 in it and you could cook eggs on it it so hot.

my dad has an athlon notebook on which he could cook a rack of lamb, i mean really it cant be called a laptop, if he keeps it there for more than five minutes it starts scalding him amd!=laptop...noooooo

I dont think that the laptop is a good arena for the Cyrix. Although it's power consumption is extremely low, and little heat is generated, it's just down right slow. Celeron's 100Mhz slower out perform a Cyrix.
That's pretty bad.

just get p4 because may be in next several years u can make dual p4. if people can make their dual p3, why we can't make dual p4.....? haha.

for the same reason people cant make dual celerons
you have to use the p4 xeons which cost silly amounts for dual p4's and as far as I know they are about level with dual athlons which are clocked slower so I don't think they are worth the cost.

Actually the P4 Xeons CPUs aren't that expensive. I just ordered a couple of 1.7Ghz P4 xeons at $313 each. It's the motherboards that are expensive. The cheapest 2 seem to be the supermicro P4DC6 and the supermicro P4DCE. The P4DC6 goes around $700 and the P4DCE (which is the same board less the onboard SCSI controller) goes for about $100 less than that.
Funny Person and Overclockers, there will be dual P-4 CPUs in the year 2002, mark my words. Besides, I saw that in one of those Intel roadmap things.
