I finished my setup and ordered windows XP professional OEM from newegg (I like having legit operating systems, besides I only have home ed :D ), well it said you're required to order hardware with it but doesn't give specifics. Not 2 days ago I ordered the system in my sig, + TONS of other ****, software, webcam etc etc. So I ordered it along with the WD 120gig HD and half-life 2.

Hopefully they won't hassle me on not ordering hardware with it because I ordered a system earlier (and a harddrive with the order), I've heard of things like this happening before. :eh?:

As far as I am aware, you can order it with _any_ hardware you want.

Yes any hardware works, they even have links on the XP page to some crappy cables you can buy with it (they might even give it to you free I'm not sure) that meets the hardware requirement.

You won't have any problems whatsoever with the hard drive purchase.

As Robrules18 mentioned, newegg will count just about anything as hardware such as an IDE cable, or a molex cable divider in my case. Back then they even used to discount the price of the cable on your order so you weren't paying for anything extra to get the hardware requirement down.

Buying OEM Windows is the best thing ever. Add a couple bucks for some tiny piece of hardware, and you've got a totally legit way of paying half price. :D

Shoot, you could have just ordered one of these, http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=12-102-104&depa=0, they don't care, just as long as it qualifies as hardware.

This is my best choice for an os price.

Newegg does this every once in a while. Like before a new semester.

That's an upgrade though, not a full version.

I'd really like to know how/why they're selling $6,000 copies of 3ds max for $500, $2,000 Maya for under $300, and $1,600 Lightwave for $250. Something that seems too good to be true usually is.

Just as good, just cheaper.

I bought WinXP Home OEM, and they charged me 15 cents for a 10k OHM capacitor, lol!

Wow, frame it, there's not many 10K Ohm Capacitors around. :D

Wow, I didn't get that joke. :)

Why do they make you buy hardware? It seems SO stupid that they'll let you buy any piece of hardware.

Some "requirement."

It's kind of like a loophole. They have requirements that need to be met to sell OEM products, in this case at least 1 piece of hardware. Lucky for us, "hardware" is a pretty expansive term, and applies to the most stupid little things like a wire or capacitor. All they say is "You have to sell this product with hardware", they say "Well a 10 cent capacitor is hardware, since you didn't say anything specific."

I get the idea, it's just ludicrous.
