I got this 'Stupid' (Super) Orb and I don't know how to remove it, I got a Green Cooler from a friend he says his temps with 1Gig T-bird never get beyond 43C and mine are at 57C!! I have no clue how to remove it without braking something...
Any one could suggest something please??? I gotta return the GC to the friend tommorow, so I'm in a hurry!
Please hurry, but I would like an extended suggestion because I never had dealt with a Socket A coolers just with Socket 7...
The clip seems to be a single hunk of metal no moving parts...
Help please

I had to completely remove my mobo to even start to remove my smorb (super mini orb). Took about 10 minutes of careful use of a flat bladed screwdriver, used as a lever, to remove the long arm clip, nearly broke off one the resistors close to the socket in doing so.
It was off, I reapplied some AS2, about the only thing keeping the T-bird from hitting 47-50 C and put the smorb back on, since the next heatsink I'm getting is a waterblock... soon.

why did u have to take out the mobo?
Thx I think I finally understand how to do it, will do it tommorow
Or, you could break out your trusty Dremmel and just VERY carefully grind the clip off, vacuum the case out VERY VERY well, and put your new hsf on.

I don't want to ruin the orb because I'll maybe will be able to exchange it for two Green Coolers if they work good...
Isn't there no other way except removing the mobo from that case?
I'd advise taking the mobo right out. You don't wanna chip your die.

I took out my mobo took couple of mins...
Then I carefully removed the SO...
When it was off, I looked at the chip and saw just a shiny core!!!
No stepping code, nothing! I think that the thermal compound used by the orb took it off!!!!! :( Now I dunno what stepping my CPU is, I only know the die isn't squere but its rectangle...
I put my white thermal compound on and installed the HS,
it took me forever to reconnect all the stuff on the mobo, and the cards and cables... Then I booted...
My now idling temp is 50C and the the full load last time I checked was 56 but without all that noise the Super Loud Orb made...
I finally can hear my HD!!!!! :p

there is a prog at TweakFiles.com to find out what stepping your CPU is it is called WCPUID search for it there you'll find it.
Shame about the CPU what goop were you using that generic stuff is crap.
Your just lucky the cpu works but as I said get a better HSF like a CAK38 or Glaciator or SK6.

I don't mean the Stepping ID: 2 I mean the steppind like AXIA and stuff...
The problem with Israel that we have only Orbs and generics...
If someone I know will go to USA I'll ask him/her to buy me 1, thx for the ansewrs, they helped me.
