Alright well here is the deal, I have a crappy dial up connection on my computer in my sig that I use to fold with and I have been having problems with actually downloading WU's and getting them to run. I do however have access to a broadband connection.

So I was wondering if I can set-up like 10 instances of FAH on a small 2 gb hd and download all my WU's on the broadband comp and them take the harddrive with me and connect it to my computer. Then I can work on these 10 WU's and then when they are all done go grab some more on the broadband connection.

So will this work or will I have problems with it?

Sounds like too much hassle to me ... if you have a computer with broadband internet access, why not just use it?

I think that you could do that. You would have to have the same version of folding on the broadband machine. Have it download a work unit. Then, stop it and cut the work folder and paste it in your machine.

Can you do somehting like 10 of them. Maybe not. Remember that there are time limits that each unit has to be completed within. You don't want to do a bunch of work for no return.

I would probably not try it myself.

It is being used to fold but at my current success rate with downloading WU"s and actually getting them to work on my comp it is making this option actually seem like a good idea. It seriously takes up to 2 hours for FAH to actually start working on a WU, and during that time I can not use the connection for anything.

Sounds to me like you may have another issue. Even at 14.4 it would not take that long. I would look for virus, spyware, and the like to see what is taking all of your bandwidth.

thats for sure even the big packet jobs shouldn't hold you back that much...what speed are you connecting @?

You should have bigpackets turned off for DUN - it takes too long to upload and download. It could take quiet a while to transfer on dial up, as thats what I use. Personally though, with bigpackets turned off at home, I do not have any problems uploading or downloading, so you may want to give that a shot and see if there is a difference.

I use dialup (4 computers sharing it :) ) and FAH is just fine. It takes 5-10 minutes usually I believe and I connect @ 28.8. With bigpackets its a bit longer, but they don't get downloaded quite as often so it evens out a little.

That's one of the reasons big packets are worth 2x the points of their benchmarked value, since they tend to be more than 5MB, so for dial-uppers they take a bit longer to send and receive.

I also say there is something not right with your connection, I have 8 computers running off a 56k line, one being a dually, and I have no problems.

I have been getting the following error on my computer hooked up the dial-up connection.
[11:24:32] Couldn't v3Decompress
[11:24:32] - Fatal: Could not decompress work unit data.
[11:24:32] Error: Could not open work file
[11:24:32]
[11:24:32] Folding@home Core Shutdown: FILE_IO_ERROR
[11:24:35] CoreStatus = 75 (117)
[11:24:35] Error opening or reading from a file

This is why it takes so long as everytime it tries to open the downloaded WU it gets that error. It will eventually manage to open up a WU but it can take a lot of tries to open it succesfully. I think my computer is in need of a reformat and I will proboly be doing this soon. Maybe that will solve this issue.
