i have win200 set to go to standby and lock computer after 10 min. all was working fine until today. now this message comes up: preparing to standby. and nothing happens. it wont recover form this either and i have to restart the computer. could my install already be messed up. ive only been using w2k for a week or so and auto play has messed up, winamp has crashed, music match has as well, now it wont go into standby!!!. whats going on here?
you running the fsb at 150? I think that maybe causing your problem some HD can't take it! I know that sucks but try lowering your overclock to 800 and see if you can repair the install with the win2k disk.

If your trying to to on standby your harddrives might be trying to power down..Since you have programs running at the time this is happening they might be not responding and locking up your system.

try to lower the FSB and up the multiplier, that might fix it. other than that try another install

i have been running at 150 fsb with win98 for months with no problems. before that i was running at 150-pci for the slower ram i had. so its been at 900 for about a year. granted win2k is a much different OS but do you still think that is the cause? i have had it at 150 for so long i didn't even think about lowering it. if it comes to a reinstall i will definetly lower it to 800 or maybe even spec.
about the hard drive trying to power down. i have it set to never power down. so i dont know why that would be a problem.
pretty much the only reason i had it set to go to standby is for the option " prompt for password when comming out of standby". if there is another way to do this i would. any suggestions?
thanks for all the input.
You have to remember that Win2000 is not a DOS based OS, its an NT-based OS. A very different entity. I would just lower your FSB a little bit and see if that clears up the problem, if it dosn't, and you still just wanna lock your computer, just press CTRL+ALT+DEL and click "Lock Computer". Thats what I do, and it stops my sister from using my cable internet very effectively. Also, you might wanna set up an Audit Policy for logon, to monitor successful access and failed access, that'll tell you if somebody is trying to access your computer when you're not around. Its a great thing!
