View Full Version : Can SK6 take an 80mm Fan?

I wanted to know if it's possible to attach a quieter but equally as powerful 80mm fan (or maybe even 92mm) on an SK6. I don't want the noise from the Delta to keep me awake at night but I do need some major cooling for my PIII700@1071.

Yeah, I thought that but the top of the SK6 isn't conventional like the CAK38 et al and I was wondering whether this would cause any problem in adapting it to a bigger fan... apparently not

Thanks

Hmmm... Lets forget about the dB for a sec, how much CFM above the Delta would I have to use to make a noticeable drop in temp... what do think guys?

I've made a custom fan adapter out of a plastic bottle. This allows me to use a 92mm fan on my SK-6. You can see the adapter attached to the fan in this picture:

http://home.worldonline.dk/~awrp/images/CaseMods/Fan%20with%20adapter%2002.jpg

The fan I've chosen is a PAPST 3412NGL which is run at 10V to lower the noise a little. At 10V it moves 30CFM at only 16dB(A).

I modded one of the fan clip sets to accommodate the larger fan on top of the fan adapter, but I'm looking into making a bracket for the fan and fan adapter in stead, because I'm not comfortable with the socket holding the 450g HSF combo...

Yeah, that's what I'm talking about! The Delta is on it's way with the SK6 but I'm still interesting in sticking a bigger/quieter fan on.

Have you used different fans? What are the temp differences? Was the bottle top mod easy or tricky to get right?

As mentioned, I'm uncomfortable with the high weight of the HSF combo, so I chose to use a small 19dB(A) 60mm PAPST fan in stead until I get the bracket made.

I did try mounting the big HSF combo, but I found that I'd be risking ripping the socket out of the mobo .

Actually, I'm quite surprised by the performance of the SK-6 with the weak 60mm PAPST (only 15CFM!!). My Pentium III 700@980 at 1.95V was getting a max temp of only 35C using CPUburn at high priority . I say WAS because I've since lapped my core (bad idea...).

I've mounted a duct over the CPU fan to supply it with nice cool air :D. I think I've got a picture lying around of my CPU cooling setup as it is now.

Sorry, but I don't have a picture showing my cooling setup. I only have one where the duct has been removed, so you need to image the duct coming in from the back of the case (the left) ;).

Please note my custom made heatsinks placed on all the identified hotspots on the ASUS CUSL2  :D.

Thanks for the excellent pics! I probably try some fans on my CUSL2 as well.. what kind are yours?

The SK-6 arrived this morning with the Delta Fan & arctic silver 2... after seeing what you've done I'm begining to wish that I'd gone with the 92mm YS tech fan which pushed 10CFM more than the Delta and is bound to be quieter & cost exactly the same. :(

Those temperatures are pretty low with that 15CFM fan... I have a 80mm YStech 36CFM fan I'll be trying out later when I put mine together, I'll let you know the results.

I try to use PAPST fans only since they have some very quiet fans. I like it quiet .

However, you might notice the BLORB (26.5dB(A)) on my video card and the stock V7700 Deluxe HSF (unknown dB(A), but it ain't quiet) on my nortbridge. I also have a 92mm Yate Loon fan venting out hot air at the top of the case, but it runs at 7V so it's no problem. I'm working on putting some resistors on the non-PAPST fans to silence these also.

Other than that I only have PAPST fans installed.

You can see some more pictures of my computer here (http://home.worldonline.dk/~awrp/images/CaseMods). The hotspot pictures are a bit blurry (digicam without zoom ) and yes that's my shower in the background :D. I've done quite a few mods now and you should be able to see most of them in the pictures .

I also just noticed your question about the adapter. Actually it's the bottom of a 1.5l (approx. 1/3 gallon) Fanta bottle. The plastic is extremely thick and durable, but had to surrender to my Dremel Multi .

I first cut out the bottom to have a hole approx Ø55mm and then I cut the piece off. The bottle was a perfect match since its diameter is just under 92mm. I added the cutouts you can see in the picture and worked on it until I had a perfect fit.

The adapter is 18mm tall, but adds only 12mm to the total height because of the cutouts.

I bought my SK6 from 1coolpc with an 80mm fan adapter and fan already on it. Works pretty good and is very quite! I don't think it's all that heavy. Not enough to damage the cpu anyway. One thing though, it does make it a little more difficult to get the HSF on and off. You just gotta be carefull.

Just a final update...

With the SK6, Delta Fan & Artic Silver 2 I can now run the PIII700@1113 2.00V. It will boot into Win at 1120 but it's not totally stable.

29c idle & 38 under load, whereas it used to be 34c idle & 48c load when I was running at just 933 1.75v with the Intel Stock H/S fan and some generic thermal paste!

I also have 120mm intake and 2x80mm exhaust fans. A 92mm fan is on it's way to see if I can reduce the high pitched whir of the Delta!

I'm pretty satisfied... for now! ;)

If you wish you can check out a few pics from these links to my server.
