View Full Version : Not a P4 guy but tryin to help a friend - fsb isnt right
Me and my friend have been tweaking his computer lately, to get the most out of it before he upgrades. And something strange i noticed is how slow his ram is running...its running at 96mhz fsb. Meanwhile his ram is PC 2100 so it should be running 133mhz. Right now its running 96*16 - 1600mhz. Thats a rather slow P4...now if it was running at the rams max fsb it should be 16*133 which is about 2100mhz. And for some reason his motherboard isnt letting him change it. Here is what I know:
Motherboard: Asus P4B266LA
Chipset: i845D
RAM: 2x256 PC 2100
How can we get his FSB to 133? If it can...i may not be understanding the P4's right :)
Based on the screenshot you posted. His P4 is running at the appropriate stock speed of 100FSB X 16 multi = 1600Mhz.
His ram is also running at it's appropriate stock speed of 133Mhz. Most likely via use of a 3:4 ram divider.
If you want to run his P4 at 133 X 16, You'll have to change the ram divider back to 1:1 so it stays within spec. Also, I'm not sure that his P4 1.6A can overclock 500Mhz. That's like 30% on an old chip.
Duner is right about everything running at default. That 99.63 FSB (round up to 100 FSB) is default as is the 16X multiplier. Look over at the right side of the screenie under memory. Shows 132.84 (round up to 133 MHz) which is right on the money.
DDR RAM speed is double the frequency. The ratio is 3:4, so that means the RAM is running 1.33X faster than the FSB, so 100X1.33=133, then double it for DDR=266. PC2100 is rated DDR266.
Those old 1.6A Northwoods would easily do 133 FSB. Set the memory ratio to 1:1 and the FSB to 133 and let it rip... assuming that motherboard has adjustable settings in the BIOS that allows overclocking.
Problem with that 1.6 is it a Willie Core. If it had 512K L2 cache it would be a 1.6a Northwood and have wicked overclocking powers. Unfortunatly for you, you have the older Willamette core p4 and the max you can expect is 2ghz and thats pushing it.
Yep, I thought I saw 512k cache, but I screwed up and saw 512 meg of RAM instead... so, that is a Willamette. Forget the 133 FSB. You'll be lucky to hit 2 gig.

My friend posted that for me, but yeah. My bios doesnt give me the option to adjust the fsb. We were hoping we could utilize the 133 but I doubt that will happen. I am about to ditch this system anyway so if there is a way, for experience, to boost the core speed how would I go about doing that even tho my bios doesnt have the option?
Might try softFSB. It's a free download. It may or may not work.

just tried softfsb and tried setting it to 133 but it would revert back to 100mhz. Thanks tho.

the replies about setting thr ratio to 1:1 interests me. Is this still possible knowing I have a williamette? And if it is how would I go about doing this.
Thanks in advance if the explanation becomes lengthy. :D
Going for 133 won't work, but maybe 112 FSB will. That mobo probably has no way to set ratio, it's probably auto.

batboy, do you admin any other forums dealing with general pc config? I appreciate the response. Additional Info: This system is an hp pavilion 750n. I knew before buying it that I would more than likely have problems upgrading anything in it. My new system will be an amd 64 system so I will have a better time with that.

Whoa there guys,I say whoa!!! What board are you using? That 1.6A is an overclocking little beast!!!!! Get yourself some real memory like some G Skill pc 4400
this will let you run at 2-2-2-5 up to about DDR 430 and very tight right on up to over 500. That little Willamette core couple with a board like the abit IT7 max2 ver.2 which is a 845 chipset board or a board like my Epox 4PDA2+Ver.2. you will be running that processor right up to 3 ghz around 2750 as a daily clock. The 1.6A was the first truly monster Overclocking processor ever!!. So get a good board and some good mem and you will be set!!

Here is a pic supllied by a lady I know who Has a 1.6A processor on an Abit IT7 Max2 Ver.2 Motherboard. It is a cpu-z pic of her daily clock! and a sandra score. You decide if your prossy is good for overclocking! This is on air cooling!!

As you can see by the date on the wpuid that was done on 10/06/2002
that little processor is still going today!!

Weldzilla, thats not a Willimate. . . Willies only have 256k cache.

(nice overclock though :D)

I knew I saw that Asus mobo somewhere before. Come on ziggo why did,nt you just tell us he has a HP computer. That board the Asus P4B266LA was built by Asus under contract for Hewlit Packard and Hewlit Packard only! you see I know a lot about that board and your system. I don't usually tell people this but,There is a HP Pavillion 750n sitting here in my computer room. It is my wife's and she loves the damn thing. And that is just exactly the computer your friend has. So till he gets a New case, motherboard, Ram, power supply, better heat sink and fan. he can forget about it. he should just buy all those pieces and build up something new, and just keep his HP as it is. To be honest with you my wife's computer has performed flawlessly for a longtime. All I have done to it is put in a Albatron 4280P vid card. And vaccuum out the case from time to time.

lol the point of oc'n this system is to gain experience. At the end of january I am slapping together an entirely new system, so spending money on a board for my old system isnt on my to-do-list. Who knows tho. I may want to try that along with ripping all my components out of this pos matx case and bumping it up into a new case and have two very capable machines. Weld...the board is listed in the first post. :) If i am reading you correctly...you think I can get more out of this cpu if i swap the mobo?
Thanks for all the input peeps!

oh and weld..you got any screeenies of your pc?
batboy, do you admin any other forums dealing with general pc config? I appreciate the response.
I'm not an admin... just a senior member here on the forum. Lots of different sections on this forum including general hardware and software stuff. Feel free to browse around. You can always PM any of us senior members (blue stars) or better yet, the mods (green stars) if you have forum related questions.

Very Nice and unique setup you have there. Was it absolutely necessary to weld that? Could you have just made some flanges and riveted it together? But anyway, I wasn't doubting you, just wanted to see your setup. Thanks for help guys.

Well My name is WeldZilla not RivotZilla. LOL....... And flanges would look tacky. Everytime you moved it around it would flex and that just would not do.

Last HP board i had...it allowed me to overclock...so i didnt specifiy it...although that was a good while ago so i guess things have changed, Sorry :(

weld...did you have to braze it? IS the case aluminum or steel? I ask because I have a guy that works for me who welds and since I have seen your case I am dreaming up other configurations.

WeldZilla, that is a very unique case and I LIKE IT!! Don't know why you've hidden it in this random thread, but I'm glad I got to see it!:)
BTW, what case is that and where did you get it??

I'll post the build and info in the alternative modding thread. I posted it here cuz it seemed like maybe some were skeptical of my knowledge on the subject of puters and wanted to se some proof of what I do and what I say. So in my sarcastic fashion I put it up there. That is also why I said class dismissed at the end of that post. Quite framkly I do not blame anyone for asking me or anyone else to back up what they say. There are a lot of people on forums that just flat out lie their asses off. Talk big numbers but, never produce the evidence. So I am quick to back up what I say. not a problem.
Well hey , I will post the build now
