ECC is a data verification that occurs for each memory read/write. ECC is not considered to be necessary for common desktop rigs. However it is common for servers with many large memory modules.
The verification takes an extra clock, therefore ECC-memory is slightly slower than non-ECC. ECC is probably more expensive, and I believe that the manufacturers don't give this mem much priority. It will hardly OC as well as ordinary memory, so I recommend you buy standard DDR.
