After removing my stock 9800xt heatsink & fan I replaced the crappy pad that was on the memory with some artic silver 5 and also placed as5 on the gpu. Now, I keep having errors and artifacts even at stock speeds! So, my next step was to remove the as5 from *just* the memory where the crappy pad had been and I then put some artic alumina on the memory only. I left the as5 on the gpu and then booted backup. ATITool heated up and found errors at stock speeds.... I'm thinking the memory is not making full contact with the stock heatsink since I removed the pad it originally came with. Need Help and advice from anyone who has experience with this!!! :temper:

Sounds like your card is either overheating or is now broken. Please tell me you used a static guard :(

Did you lap the memory and gpu (and ramsinks/heatsink) before you placed them together? If you didn't clean off the original well enough that could cause a lot of problems of trying to get a flat connection between the chip and the sink.

Arctic Silver takes a while for it to "settle". And its not actually a matter of time, but heat cycles(leave it on for a while then off). Of course the final temperature difference is only a few degress when used on a cpu, so I dont see why it would be any different on a gpu. Did you make sure to clean the surfaces first as well as apply a very thin coat? AS5 is meant to be applied nearly razor thin, not globbed on like some other thermal pastes.

I didn't use my static wrist strap, but I totally made sure to ground myself before I played with the card. And yes, I definately cleaned off the old junk really really good before appyling the new stuff....I turned off my pc to let my card cool off and I will report back to see how it fares.

Oh yes, I put a razor thin layer on the gpu just as I did my cpu.

Add some more paste, my guess is that the shim is preventing proper contact. I know it did on my old 9800

the HS Must be making poor gpu/ram contact

OK, I added some more paste to the gpu (as5). I can tell the memory is making contact with the hs becuase of the imprint on the artic alumina. My video has no artifacts so far, I am booting up atitool and will report back (small sigh of relief... SO FAR!)

OK guys, looks like I am back in business and I have peace of mind there is good quality heat transfer material on my 500 dollar video card. I am going to let it settle in, then see how much (probably not much, damn 1st party ati card) I can overclock this thing. Thanks for the help! See you all on HL2DM, my gamertag is "[M.I.R.]MadInsane" << just added the MIR for the hell of it, stands for madinsanity records hahaha.
