Does anyone happen to know how much a piece of acrylic roughly 17.5"x18"x 1/8" would cost?

it all depends on the type, i think. i am not an acrylic expert, but I called a couple hardware stores to see what scraps they had and I got a 12"x24" piece for $1. Otherwise I would have to buy a whole sheet which I think was about 4'x4' for $25. I would ask around. Usually they have some stuff they are trying to get rid of.

Don't bother with hardware stores. They usually supply to builders and only stock sizes and materials standard for construction.
Check these suppliers
http://www.mcmaster.com
Polycarbonate Sheet 1/8" Thick, 24" X 24", Clear = $18.27
Extruded Acrylic Sheet .118" Thick, 24" X 24" Sheet = $9.67

Polycarbonate 24" x 24" 1/8" Thick = $17.27
Acrylic Sheet 24" x 24" 1/8" Thick = $8.33

Or better still check you local phone book for plastic shops. Almost every plastic shop I've ever talked to sells scrap per pound, which should allow you to get whatever you need (acrylic or polycarbonate) for under $10.
Scrap is going to be your cheapest option and they're the most likely source for supplying you with some.

I know at my local (Ace) hardware, and Citymill (maybe its just a Hawaii think.... idk) they have like, 12"x24" and larger sheets... 1/8" thick I think... for windows. Each sheet sells for about $8 or so.
