I have just bought this combo, a KG7 RAID + 1.4 TBird with a Swiftech MC-462 heatsink and a 80mm thermaltake fan.
my CPU temperature at idle is 43 while after 100% CPU usage for 15 minutes the temperature is 48. the system temperature is 27.
Is it just me or do these temp.'s look a little high. I have taken off and reseated the HSF 3 times now with no change (thermal paste is AS2 by the way). I have applied the AS2 as per their instructions on their website
Also with a clean install of win 98SE the cpu seems to idle around 60% usage. could this be the reason for the high temperature, and if so does anyone know why this is happening.
does anyone else have this system or can anyone give me any advice or info? I would really appreciate it.
Try with the case cover off and a small house fan blowing into the side to eliminate poor airflow thru the case.
Also post your room temp.
It's a little high but well within respectable. My temps are....
Idle 33c
Gaming 48c

you may want to check the cooling posting. The huge variations in temperature is due to methods each MB mfr uses in determining core temp which is not a good science since each mfr uses a fudge factor in determining the delta T thru the substrate, location of sensor, etc. and cpu temp disp is directional (top of chip).

That seems normal. You might not have a low idle temp like what I have just because I use wpcredit to change the registry from 6B to EB. The idle to load temp variance is small & that I believe is because you have effective airflow thru your case but you might need to get more volume to bring you closer to ambient.

Thanx for all the posts, I think I'm gonna have a go at modding my case, with a couple of fans in the side blowing towards the cpu, memory etc, and a 120mm fan on the top of the case.
can anyone recommend a decent, but quite quiet 120mm fan, and point in in the direction of where to buy one.
I have a couple of 80mm fans to stick in the side.

Here is a good place for the best and quietest 120mm case fan made;

running 49C at full load for first sys full load
running 56C at full load for second sys full load
Room temp , room temp , room temp.
1.2@1.3 with the room at 80F the idle cpu temps are 36c-38c , 39c-41c on the net and 42c at full load (3dmarkXX for 50min) , but with the room at 81f the idle moves to 38c-40c on the net 41c-43c while at full load 44c. The system temps fluxuate aswell 80f 29c-32c but at 81f 31c-34c. I cant wait until winter (desert winter) then I should be able to keep the house around 78f-79f unless of cource it gets turned up which is inevidable.

My room Temp is about 21
21c well have you tried to remove the side of your case to see what the temps change to. I would say like others , you need more air volume you need to remove the heat the cpu generates as quickly as possible.
