ok, i just got my new system. its an AMD T-Bird 1.4 ghz, with 512 megs or pc2100 ddr. i just got it today and when im installing win2k the case speaker starts going off. so i check the temp on restart and the cpu temp was 140.5 degrees far. which is roughly 60 degrees celsius. is this bad? and what can i do to fix it? i have some round heatsink (dont know specifics) any help is much appreciated as i really dont want to blow up my new comp. thanks a lot.

Yes,definately too high. For one, your HSF is a very important component and you should spend the extra money to get ya a really good one!Post in cooling for some suggestions on which are the best.I have a Millenium Glaciator and a Gladiator and they both work great.I'm sure this is your problem.Nothing likes high temps and if thats idle you should be careful because you will toast your chip!

Just like Bubba said, those temps are way to high. I would invest in a better heatsink/fan. To me, it sounds like an orb. Which is no good for the Thunderbird's!

get the Glaciator or the SVC golden gate

i dont know if that is idle or not, i just got done playing counter-strike and it was 65 degrees, which is what it was when i checked right after i made that last post. bu i am definately going to the place i got this and getting a different heatsink. the one i have now is round with a fan in the middle of the heatsink. but she also said something about having a square one. thanks for the help guys. (oh yeah its got 3 case fans, and then the heatsink, i gott it to cool down a bit buy taking the case off) but i will definately have that fixed. once again thank you for all the great info.

ok i just looked. now that im done gaming it is around 62 deg Celsius.

what would you guys consider being the threshold for the max temp it could take? just curious.

I think it's around 70c, or is that the highest the chip will run stable. Either way go back and try to get another.

It is very hard to find any quality HSF's in any retail stores, at least I've never seen one. You should try a site like www.2cooltek.com or www.crazypc.com.

First go to the front page and read the HSF reviews and do some research.

65c is borderline toast I wouldn't even run it until you got the cooling under control!AMD does say 70c but I think anyone will agree with me here that it's not gonna run if you hit 70.Is the computer stable? How are you getting your temps? Maybe it's off a little because I wouldn't think your comp. would be stable that high. Also if you get a fan get some good thermal paste(Arctic Silver II is the choice around here). That orb HSF you have will not keep a 1.4 cool enough! They like lots of cold air.But please turn that thing off and get it taken care of or your gonna have a new key chain for $110.00

U say u got some round heatsink?
You didnīt buy an Orb of some kind did you?
If yes, then screw it as fast as possible and get something decent...The Thermalright Sk-6 seems to be a good buy....
Very good cooling at a quite reasonable price...
And donīt forget to apply a THIN layer of thermal paste.
Best arctic silver II, but any generic paste will be better than nothing..
Hope that helps!

And perhaps you could put your system in your sig, we would be able to help you much easier like this...

ok, i just got the new heatsink but it is still running a bit high i think. (54-55 idle thats still with the case off) i havent tested gaming yet. you guys keep mentioning all of these products but i am clueless on where to go to get them. also would modding the case with outside fans help any? i may do that. but any links or names of stores that carry stuff like that would help a lot, because as the title of this thread says, i am just a newbie at this stuff.

oh yeah and thanks for welcoming me, the forums i used to frequents have been closed down, i look forward to making these ones my new home. :D

could that be why it runs so hot? also, the motherboard says 266 on the box. so shouldnt the external clock be 266, as opposed to the 133 shown in that image?

what type of compound are you using between the processor and the heatsink? is it a pad? white stuff? or Arctic Silver II? the last one is the best and the first one is the worst . If you just got your new rig ,in my opinion I would NOT cut it open unless you have to, I made that mistake and now I have this STUPID hole in the side of my case
