I get occasional lockups!

I have 256 mb RAM.
Checking my psychical memory stats I discovered that my Psychical Memory gets lower and lower within a few hours after my pc has been booted until it reaches 0 (even when I don't run any problems).
Could this be the problem that causes the lockups ?
Offcourse there are a few icons in the corner of my taskbar like from my soundblaster and cd writer but could this use that much psychical memory ?

please help me!

my pc > Pentium III 1 Ghz 256 mb Ram GeForce 2 GTS 64 mb DDR

What operating system?
Have you changed the virtual memory settings and if so what to?

I use Windows 98 and I did not touch the virtual settings.

You might have too many programs that may be conflicting or maybe a virus.

Virus is a good suggestion!

If your system checks out clean then take a look at any background services you've got running. One of them might suffer from a memory leak...

Ok I'll check for viruses

a memory leak sounds logical

but how can I find out if there is a memory leak ?

You'll need a diagnostics program that'll tell you how much mem each process uses. Just monitor all the processes and look for one that keeps eating your mem.

It would've been easier under Win2k/NT because a monitor is built into the OS. I can't think of any monitor programs right now, but someone here surely knows a good one for you :).

I'll post back if one pops into mind ...

God bless the windows nt task manager. One of the main reasons I can't use 98, plus the fact 98 freezes 9 out of 10 times I use it.

I heard with nt/2k if you have a monsterous amount of ram, you can turn off virtual memory and have a F***** quick system. I never tried it, but with ram so cheap now maybe i should.

AFAIR, you can't turn off VM. You can however reduce it to a couple of megabytes.

I wouldn't recommend doing so, though. Win2k handles RAM/VM extremely well and if there's RAM available then it won't use the page file much.
