I still cant get over how easy PVC is to work with. Its so cheap and yet strong. I will have to use it more often. Only problem is they arent too pretty. Any suggestions on dolling them up? I was thinking about some chrome contact paper. I dont wanna get into painting cuz its not too practical for this application.

check out my website for a little more info if you are curious. http://home.satx.rr.com/facialicious/index.html

haha, that's pretty awesome. :D

And to doll them up, you could get purple suede(sp?) and wrap it up in that for the pimp status. :p

lol, my dad made a speaker out of a concrete pipe when he was a student...

Reminds me of my own. Only I actually did a DIY project that someone else online did. But hey, it looks great.

It's a tad bit shorter than four feet, and is just about a foot wide at the bass, but it's very stable. I've run into it a few times traveling to my bed in the dark and my speaker doesn't fall off.

I do like yours though, much simpler, I think I'll borrow your idea for my TV speaker system once I get it. if you don't mind that is.

hey, celeron. i actually got the idea of PVC from you. I saw yours though and thought it was too much pipe and too bulky. Those extra joints really add cost to the stands. Plus, since my speakers had manufacturer screw holes in the back this was logical. My idea is totally stealable btw :santa: I like mine cuz its a single pole going up and you can adjust the angle. I have mine slighty leaning forward so that the speakers angle down.

For some dimensions...The stands are just over 4 feet tall (i originally had them at 5' but they were too high in relation to my chair so I lopped em off). The front feet are 1' and there are 6" pipes between the T and elbow joints. The pipes stay at their angles unless you apply some force to them. You could easily secure them with a wood screw though and that would still allow you to adjust them later by just backing the screw out.

I really like the purple suede idea :P or maybe just some fake fur. Where could I get me some of that? I havent given up on my contact paper yet. I saw someone who did a PC mod with some metal paper but I cant remember where he got it. I thought he said Wally world but I cant find em on their site :'(

Hmm, when did you see my stands before this post? I'm kinda freaked out about the o.O

I think the metal paper you're talking about is the stuff people use on model airplanes. I bought a big roll of it at Hobby Town here in Boise for around $12.00. It's applied with heat. The name of the stuff I bought is UltraCote, but there are at least 5 other names for it from what I know. I think PlastiCote is one of them.

im saw it here, silly. in the "build your own shelves" (or something like that) thread.

I think the stuff you are talking about is too high tech :P I was just talking about some paper with adhesive backing. I think its supposed to be that wallpaper accent stuff. you just unroll it and slap it on there.

I like the idea. I would suggest a nice flat black spraypaint can paint job. I do not know how well you could do that crome tape so that it dosnt look bad.

If you want to put a finish on it, without painting, there is few options.
Contact adhesive, then just about anything porous can be applied to it, like faux fur or paper product or foils, from any yardage dept, in most dept. stores. I would think for specialized materiel, I would go to a store called "Michael's". http://www.michaels.com/art/online/home
Or another route if you like "pimpin' purple". The primer that is used on PCV is purple. Just apply a coat, then lightly sand it, add few coats and wall'ah you got colored stands.

I did the same thing only to suspended the speakers from the ceiling. This way there are no stupid people tripping on them or knocjing them over. However, it does result in pinata like antics.

PVC Primer is primarily used to quick dry the cement used with it, and I mean QUICK (within seconds). So if anyone plans on using it to build a stand, I don't recommend it. I didn't use it cause if I messed up by putting it in the joint wrong at first chance, then at least I had the chance to pull it out before it completely set.

(Just a note to be sure no one uses PVC cement on first instinct)

Actually ya... one of those speakers has a very dense metal box too... But I've only hurt my head on the wooden one as of yet.

Now that I think about it; you see that chair in the bottom of the picture? It's just a little out from underneath the speaker, it think it's a subconcious protection mechanism... I only hit my head on it when I do really weird and unusual moves and practily fall over other stuff... like the chair.

I'm all about teh ghetto.

The speaker stands are a good idea! One of the only reasons holding me back from buying a 5.1 system has been where to put them in the rear. I guess another quick trip to Home Depot is in order now.

Crash, are those home made speaker casings?

The one's on the desk are. They sound great! It was a present from a um... hrm... father figure of mine. He got the speakers and the wood and we designed and built them. Not too expensive either. I'm just to lazy to make them look nice n' pretty.
