View Full Version : good power supply for a pelt?
hi all i am considering the pelt rout soon and was wondering what would be a good power supply to power a high powered pelt? around 175w..i do not want to use a pc psu..i was thinking along the lines of a dc powersupply like you would get at fry's or radioshack..can anyone recommend a good cheap one?
Definately get a bench supply not a computer PSU. Just make sure the supply you get has amperage to spare, I'd get at least 5 amps over what the pelt needs to be safe. Apparently pelts draw different amounts of current depending on temperature and load. Better safe than buying a new CPU:):)!
thank you Monster of Rock for the reply, could anyone ehre estimate how much a power supply with such a high amperage would cost me?

Im thinking of putting in a 172 watt pelt and am going to power it with putting 2 AT computer psu in series to get 24volts at 10amps
unless I can find a bench DC psu
I heard there alot of money but sometimes they sell on ebay realy cheap
Well they aren't cheap, but less then then a computer PSU equivalant. Figure on $35-50 US new for a straight 12V maybe 10amp. I've seen fancy ultra-fused, voltage selectable models with VU meters for $100 or so. Try a pawn shop- these things always end up there.
Bench supply means "really big frickin power supply" and yeah they get really expensive, but you don't need a proffessional $1000 model- sure are cool tho!!
ok well i can afford to spend in the $60 range..crud games go for that much now! but anything over $80 i think is a little much for me right now..thanks alot guys its appreciated
welp i just ran a quick search on radioshack and came up with this http://www.radioshack.com/product.asp?catalog%5Fname=CTLG&category%5Fname=CTLG%5F008%5F001%5F000%5F000&product%5Fid=910%2D0447 little power supply thats on sale for $82 at radioshack..and i am sure i can get it much cheaper somewhere else..but still $82 for power supply and $31 for pelt and i'm out $113 w/out tax and shipping..and i think that is a bit much for maybe another 100mhz outta my cpu..
