Should I post wireless networking questions here or in the networking section?

Well, overclocking will be pretty much out of the question, but there is always something to be said for the reliability factor too. I hope that you enjoy your Dell..... Dude.

I've had this lil' jpeg tucked away for just this occasion... :p (it's in jest...don't take it seriously...)

That's a nice lil' rig you're getting...enjoy. (I would...LOL)

Cheers!

Hehe thanks.

10 days is along time to wait :(

Was gonna get an A64 gateway, but this was abit cheaper and more reliable.

I'm probably gonna undervolt it, and maybe underclock it too. 3ghz is overkil for winamp and MS Visual C++.

you shoulda got the pentium M, easier to slower the speed, nice system though, i got my dell and i liked it, cheap for it's value, and their customer service isn't half bad.

Congrats on the lappy. My 9100 was my first lappy and intel as well. I suggest trying this programhttp://www.diefer.de/i8kfan/ It should work on your 5160. I also suggest checking out this forumhttp://notebookforums.com/index.php?

Im sorry.

Im also the owner of a new dell lappy...mines the 3.2 version.

Not bad, but once its folding it gets hot.
Today it acutally got hot to the point of crashing...i cmae back to it and it was flashing odd thingso n the screen...hibernated and resumed, nothing. Finally had to reboot, and lost unknown amount of folding time...

Right now, shes at 80C....and sounds like a hair dryer.
Im looking for a northwood 3.2 mobile....

Ill never buy another dell, the stupidity of puitting a prescott in a laptop just bestudels me.

rite, forgot that they have different cards for those :), nice lappy you got there, i bet it smokes alot of desktops too :) 3.06 Ghz ain't a toy i tell you. i wish my desktop can be that fast, laptop do have limitation on the HDD though, i wish i bought a smaller drive from dell so i can upgrade later, i bought a 60GB from them and they slap me in the face with a 4200 RPM fujji drive, i hope u are not in the same boat.

indeed!

On that note, i have a friend who bought a 3.06 and it doesnt have a prescott....but that was a while ago. If you get one, dont bother trying to cope....void the warentee and get a nw.

its seriosuly not worth it...if i turn spedsetp off and lock this thing at 1.8 (the lowest it will go) its still too hot with not enough battery....even at idle.

other than that, its a great machine....well, the cdrw/dvdr ticks me off...i burn allot of coasters with it....and for no reason. just la la la la-POP

anyways, good luck on getting an NW, and enjoy the mobility factor....i know i do.

Actually mine is a Prescott and doesnt get nearly that hot. It usually stays around 45-52 celcius and while playing HL2 gets up to around 60-65 celcius. Of course my 9100 may have a better HS and fan setup than the 5160 does.

if it gets too hot.. like my friends lappy did.. i just opend it up..lapped the ..heatpipe or what ever it was.. the base of it. then i added some as5. ..also did a few little mods so the fan was ..overvoted ..hardly gets hot anymore..if u can stand the small noise lol

What would have better preformance in games?

3.06HT M-P4 - NVIDIA 5200 64MB - 512MBs of ram - 5400RPM HD

vs.

2.2 Barton - ATI 9500np 128MBs - 512MBs of ram - 7200RPM HD

Grats on the laptop, you got the same thing I have :) Bought mine a couple months ago.

Mine is a Prescott, but it gets nowhere near 80C. Right now it's at 54C while installing Norton Internet Security 2005, and I haven't seen it go above 65C.

I love the laptop, but I don't know how well it games. I have played KOTOR, CivIII, and Dungeon Siege on it, and all those run beautifully, but I haven't tried UT2k4 or Doom3 on it yet, mostly because I don't want to try playing those with a touchpad. That's what I have a desktop for!

Im probably just gonna use my old MS intellimouse explorer with it.

I would say the AMD rig. GeForce FX5200 < ATI 9500np afaik although I think the ATi is DX8 and the 5200 is DX9 so that may make a difference. The Barton is an XP3000 so should keep pace with a 3.06GHz P4 more or less.

Also a faster hard disk would mean the PC was more responsive when reading the hard disk.

gah!! The 9500np is DX9 dave ;) That's all I have to say :)

was just reading that an hour of laptop usage raises your scrotal temperatures by about 2-3 degrees C. I guess anything over 1C can lead to infertility and definitely lower sperm count. but like I say "who needs 'em?!" ;) anyway enjoy the laptop! but don't forget about all your little 9mmcensors!

But, previous studies suggest that 1°C above the baseline is the possible minimal thermal gradient capable of inhibiting spermatogenesis and sperm concentration may be decreased by 40% per 1°C increment of median daytime scrotal temperature.

and good luck with the new comp!

P4 and laptops dont mix but they probly outsell the centrino because of the P4 badge.

celeron can go to hell.

most of the time I will be using my laptop at home or at school. both places have readily availble electrical plugs.

I wanted power over mobility.

Do you even know what a Celeron-M is?
It has nothing to do with the old crap celeron, the celeron-M is like a optimized dothan with 1mb cache and is a good laptop cpu unlike the p4.

The 5160s only come with P4 HT processors, but the are Mobile versions, so they use speed stepping and all that.

It's a great laptop, I can get 3-4 hours of normal computing time on the standard battery easily. I buy them at work for our engineers and sales staff, they love them except for the weight.

The 5160s only come with P4 HT processors

Thats why I bought it. I wanted HT (because when I am working I have a pdf viewer open, word, powerpoint, winamp, microsoft visual C++ and maybe a few browsers open, and if I can burn a cd/dvd at the same time then sweet. I wanted a system that could multitask like mad, so HT was something I really needed. I also wanted a nvidia gpu, for linux compatibility.

I know what I need. I know what I want. I know how to figure out what is logical. I just cant remember where I put my bus pass.

If a Dothan was good for me, I would have gotten it. Thanks for the concern though.

No prob :)

Im actually surprised that the celly-m's are that good. in the past they have been castrated pentiums, but these aren't quite that bad.

i still wouldn't have gone for one though, I would wanted the full 2megs of cache :)

hmmm i always thought they where normal celerons with speed step added

i must investigate further to see if this is true that intel would make another entirely new processor instead of modding an older generation. it's just not intel's way of doin things.

I officially dont hate Intels anymore. Well I never really "hated" them. But I appreciate it allot more now. For Desktop use, I <3 them. Ripping CDs, playing music xchat, and typing this. Doesn't faze it at all. Hurrah for Intel.

But anywhooo. I have a question. I hate the trackpad. I use it when I have too but mices are better. When I plug my MS IntelliMouse Explorer 3 in it moves the cursor for a few seconds then stops. Any way to get it working?

^^^^^ i had that same problem too i had to download updated drivers which allowed for simultaneous operation of my mouse and pad. but i have an mx 510 so i could not say about your mouse. you could try disabeling yur touchpad, maybe it's conflicting with your mouse.

the mouse. basically the updated drivers for the mouse contained an updated mouse utility program which was able to correctly control the mouse and pad at the same time and also has seperate tabs for the pad and mouse so settings like sensitivity and acceleration cold be set independently.
