Even if you are set for auto-login on the 98 PC it will need to either be set up with the exact same username as the Win2K PC or the Win2K PC has to have an account set up within it with the same username/password you have on the Win98 box.

If you don't have any new shares other than the administrative shares set up on the Win2K box then it will ALWAYS ask for password.

The Win98 box will need to be set up to log into a Microsoft Network and then you can set up your account. It can be set up to automatically log in with or without password...just make sure that the Win2K PC has an account for priviledges entered into to it using the same credentials.

so do you mean that i have to create an account on my win2k machine that have the same user name as my win98 machine and same password then everything would work?

you need to do one of two things to the Windows2000 machine:

1- Enable GUEST account (somewhat insecure)
Open up User Manager:
Start/Settings/Control Pannel/Users & Passwords
Advanced Tab
"Advanced User Management" / press Advanced button
Under "Users", Right click on "Guest" and go into properties and Uncheck "Account is disabled", then apply it.
You should be able to access the w2k machine now.

2- Make an account for the win9x computer. (more secure)
same deal, open up till the Users tab.
then create a new user, the username HAS TO BE THE SAME USERNAME THAT THE WINDOWS 9X COMPUTER IS LOGGED IN AS (or in a multi-user w9x computer, make an account for each user.)
fill in the rest of the form, click ok, apply the changes.
You should be able to access the w2k machine now.

Yeah, I had that same problem when I first installed Win2k.
