Ok when setting voltage for the CPU which wins the BIOS or the jumpers on the slocket?

I had my slocket running 2.1v. It booted to 140fsb from 100fsb. But when I lowered the voltage on the slocket to 2v and set the BIOS to 2.1v it wouldnt come close to booting...

Now the reason I asked this is because when I did the voltage change I also replaced the stock HS for my lapped and deltaed Alpha. And I removed two DIMMs leaving only my 256mb 133fsb cas2 Crucial in there. I have also fiddled with the BIOS so everything is off.

I got my be6 to boot my p3 700 100fsb to 980@140fsb but I had error messages. That was with the stock HS! It ran 135fsb fine! even after a brief burn-in!

First of all, that's too high of voltage for the type of air cooling you are describing. It's been a while since I used a slotket, but I set the voltage on the slotket at a little higher than default which gave me more BIOS options of voltage settings (like 1.8v for example). Then I did all my fine tuning voltage adjustments in the BIOS. If you're flirting with 2v or higher, you better think about better cooling than what you currently have.

? My celly ran fine with 2.1v and a gorb. Now the alpha is on the CPU and my temps at idle are 32c

When I was running CPUStability tests the temps never went above 52c. It mostly stayed in the high 40s Thats with the stock HS/F and with me watching my temps. It never kicked me out or anytning like that. Then while I slept this morning I ran the same test at default speed but 2.1v. It ran fine for over 6hrs.

If the temps are low why should I take notice to the voltage? My room is freezing cold due to a new A/C. The temps are low. No hiccups @ 135fsb 2.1v? Why should I not raise the voltage and FSB? Isnt every chip different? Isnt everybody's system different? Basically what I am trying to say is that I monitored my system at that voltage. The CPU was no where (my opinion) close to being damaged by heat. I did have registry errors at 140fsb, But that was a frequency issue not a voltage issue (though more may have helped).

Maybe I'm overly cautious, but I try to keep my load CPU temps at 40 degrees C. or under. Also, I've heard of one too many people frying their CPU running above 2 volts. As long as you're aware of the risks and don't mind pushing the envelope, then go for it and good luck.

batboy, if I ruined the CPU I would simply plug in my cCO 600celly or use my old 600cel HP system.

Also I bought this chip with one purpose in mind. And taht is to overclock it. This is an expandable item to me. I do not mess with the HP system much as thats my backup.

Everybody has different uses for their systems. Mine is to max overclock as much as my skills allow.

But I have noticed that after instaling the HS and messing with the voltage on the slocket, my temps are varying from 32 to 40 degrees. very odd i wondered if I messed something up installing the slocket back in the MB?

In my experience more than 2v is too much for coppermines, and I don't beleive it is a heat issue as I have heard from people who have ran at like 2.1v and had low temps and still had the chip die.

The voltage on the slocket should overide the bios, the slockets jumpers set the Voltage ID for the chip which the bios uses as a bases, then the bios settings can add too this. But most bios's don't set the core voltage until during the post which means that if they need a certain voltage to post they won't post which is why setting the voltage on the slocket is the best option.

Ok phil thanx for the info. So then set with the jumpers and reset in bios. sounds easy enough.

Now as for the voltage if I ever get rich I will try to wire 12v triaght to the cpu and see how high the HS jumps off the cpu!

Sounds like a combo of adjusting both a little got you the most stable results

Do you really need to run at 2V+?

I am burning in at 2.2v and temps are stable at 46c, down from 49-51c
