Please, for the sake of humannity, do not buy a wallmart notebook computer. While the 500 dollar price tag may seem like a good deal, but watch out! They suck lemons! I tried to talk my aunt out of buying one, I told her to get a Dell or somthing. But nope, she bought it. This one to be exact. Balance 14.1" Laptop Computer With AMD Athlon 4 Processor (http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.gsp?product_id=3163026) It can't even run Windows XP properly, 128MB standard? LOL, and a OMG. It can't even play CS 1.6 without overheating in the first 5 minutes, and it had a dead orange pixel. I had to buy her another 512mb SODIMM to slap in there. Now it's faster but it still sucks arse, and it doesint even overclock.

Me neither, it's actually a Mobile Athlon CPU with 256k L2 cache, and it's a palomino. Socket A, unlocked and I want to rip it out and throw another one in there, lol I don't think she will notice. Lol, I'm just kidding.
You know what's funny, my 4 year old IBM T20 is BETTER!!
And I can get them all day, for $400! They were about $2700, when they were new.

You're right about those T20s kicking ass. My friend has an A20 with only 600mhz and 128mb ram and it runs XP with all visual effects on no prob :p I just got my 500mhz m700 and it too runs XP perfectly (although I streamlined it a bit ;)

Well of course it won't run games, it's not a gaming laptop, why is this a surprise? It might be able to run Counterstrike at 640x480 and give you 20 frames per second.
Of course it won't overclock, no laptops will overclock (although I'm sure someone will now post to tell me they overclocked their laptop just to prove me wrong).
The Walmart laptop is marketed as a low end laptop for people who need mobility but just need to do basic things like surf the web, check email, type documents, etc. No one ever claimed it can compete with high end gaming laptops... For its price it's not a bad deal for someone who only uses it for web surfing, wordprocessing, etc.
Lol...Walmart hasnt been "rolling back" prices lately, so why not roll back technology......

My local Wal-Mart has three laptops on display, they all have nearly all their keys ripped off, and none of them are ever turned on. They've been there like that for months :)

Actually it ran CS at 800x600 with an average framerate of 30-40 FPS!

That might be an Athlon 64 chip.

Nevermind... I didn't even think CPUs that run at 1.1Ghz were being manufactured anymore...
It's pathetic, but there's obviously a market for these (your aunt) and so long as people buy them ...
I do recommend the emachines they sell to some folks who just need internet access. Saves me having to build a basic box and support them. ["Why's my PC slowing down?" "Why does the internet tell me I have a virus and to click here to scan?" "Why's my homepage set to unclecousindonkeysex.biz?"]

same....It got to the point that after the money it wasnt worth the frustration...phone calls of people. Getting called down by your counsler to fix her computer. Getting stopped in the halls...Heck even my foot doctor asked me about spyware and called my house!

Ugh...spyware is a nightmare and the uninformed just soak it up like a sponge. I think MS should just replace IE6 with a browser that just pops up a window that says "You're to stupid to use the Internet, connection denied."

Wow who knew??? Athlon 4 Palomino is HERE! Get one now! Oh wait it's from 2001
http://www.anandtech.com/showdoc.html?i=1469
I thought the Althon 4 was commonly known? It was indeed the first wave of the AthlonXP Palomino CPUs, running between 1.0 and 1.5GHz if I remember correctly.

I'm going to see if She'll let me borrow it for a couple of days. :bday:
And enough of the insinuating, lol. I wouldn't buy that crap for 500 dollars! :p

The words wal-mart and notebooks should never be in the same sentance together ever :p.
That is too bad though that your aunt is now stuck with that POS.

Athlon 1 = Slot
Athlon 2 = Socket
Athlon 3 = Socket Tbird with 256KB L2 Cache
Athlon 4M = Stripped down pally
Athlon 4 (AKA XP) = Pally as we know it
Athlon XP-M = Mobile XP's
.18 micron, 200MHz FSB, orignally came in 1GHz, 950MHz, 900MHz, and 850MHz. Later they released the 1.1GHz version. 256KB on die L2.
They were pally cores, but low voltage, low fsb. They were the transition from T-Bird to the "XP" pally, with 200MHz FSB instead of 266MHz being the most obvious.
So it's most likely he will not be able to find a 100/200MHz FSB mobile athlon any faster than what he has now, although some places on the web say there's a 4-M @ up to 1.3GHz...

They should, if you are talking about the cardboard and plastic thing, with the 3 rings in it. :D:D
However, if we are talking about some electronic device, you're right. :bang head

yeah im pretty sure everyone on this board ends up doing stuff like that...im sick of being everyone and their grandma's computer guy... definitely not worth the money... get rid of all the spyware and three days later they have it all again... walmart and notebooks jeez... come to think about it, its good marketing strategy, anyone shopping for a computer at WALMART could probably be suckered into buying that junk
