I was running System Monitor right after start up and I had 80% processor usage. Then I closed all programs in the systray, then I alt-ctrl-deleted all the programs except systray and explorer and It was still at 80%??? What the?? Will this affect SETI times?

How much does it go up with Seti running?

I've heard of a few people who's computers act similar to that. If the cpu usage goes up to 100% does it drop back down after the program using 100% of the cycles has been closed?

Well then there is obviously something running in the background that is using that, try a ctr-alt-del to see what else is running other than explorer and systray

oops sorry. Ok then try this (http://www.iarsn.com/download.html) it shows a list of everything running and the amount of cpu cycles they are using.

so according to task monitor the cpu isn't at 80%? does sound like a problem with system monitor then.
