Ive played and beat Starcraft and Brood Wars(loved both games) and Warcraft 3 and Frozen Throne, as well as the age of empires games... Im looking for a new RTS to play.... graphics dont really matter. I really want something with a good single player, as well as decent multiplayer. I played C&C red alert(or something like that) and absolutely hated it... I literally threw it in the trash after about 4 missions. Dont ask what exactly I didnt like, I guess it was the interface or something. Im not going to buy generals unless it is very different... so any suggestions?

Total Annihilation is an old old rts about the same time as SC i think. But it is a great one imo....very different from SC too, you should be able to get it for like $4 at ebx or something it has 2 expansions, Core Contingency and Battle Tactics. There is also a prequel called Total Annihilation: Kingdoms....its pretty bad might want to avoid that one...

Some friends of mine really like Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War.

Rise of Nations is an awesome game, the single player is outstanding.

Rome Total War = best strategy game ever made :)

Dawn of War = very good rts

Battle of middle earth = good rts, but just seems to have some severe balance issues so I would rate dawn of war higher :(

Loving the heck out of the expansion to Rise of Nations, Of Thrones and Patriots. Its excellent and has an awesome single player campaign. And when you are done with that it is a pretty good mp game as well.

warhammer 40k: Dawn of War, Dark Reign2 and Sudden Strike/Sudden Strike addon/Sudden Strike2 get my vote - the SS series is awesome and very tactical

I'd recommend giving Kohan 2: Kings of War a shot. The mechanics and interface are great. It eliminates tedious micro management that detracts from the strategy elements of most games.

Don't forget Savage for your multiplayer fix! It's a hybrid Real Time Stategy Shooter.

I would definately say Rome Total War and agree that it's the best RTS ever made, it also has a very strong turn-based element,

Second I would say Rise of Nations, it has very good single player and offers a lot of options and features.

Battle for Middle Earth is pretty good, but it isn't as good as the previous two, IMO.

Rome: Total War is getting all of my attention these days...put it on the harder levels and you better read the Art of War before playing...

Get C&C generals and the zero hour expansion. It is arguably the best strategy game out there now, and it is nothing at all like red alert.

I thought generals completly sucked compared to red alert. Red Alert 2 was the best for a while. I liked the Rome total war demo, been meaning to pick it up.

You won't believe how many hours I wasted playing Rome: Total War. I love this game.

Haha, yeah same here. It was always like, "well just one more turn" but I often continued to play for another hour or two. So addictive. . .

Dawn Of War is nice, but it's Single Player is pretty crap, 11 missions, and mainly same stuff.

Id look at C&C Generals and Zero Hour, Rome Total War, Sudden Strike and Age Of Mythology.

I finished the game playing as the House of Julii, then started another campaign as the Seleucid Empire...excellent and a huge time eater. I've never played a game that eats time like this one does....great fun. The best battle Ive fought so far was about 3000 of my infantry on a hill side backed up with a couple thousand archers and cavalry troops. I killed about 8000 enemy troops before they broke completely and I sent in my cavalry to run the remainder into the ground...I lost about 800 troops total..
