I'll keep the story short and sweet: took off the heatsink, wiped stock paste off, put AS5 on, put heatsink back on, plugged in vid card and turned it on, and now it's f'd right up. I'm getting translucent red/pink lines going up and down the screen, and 3d isn't even close. Is the card totally lost or do I have any hope in repairing it?
Thanks.

"If it aint broke, dont fix it". That is exactly why i say, leave the card alone, unless you know what your doing. Personally i wouldnt want to mess around with it. What would have the AS5 really gotten you other then piece of mind that it runs maybe 1-3C cooler. WOW!!! HUGE PERFORMACE GAIN. Come on man, was it worth it? That card could probably be used as a nice mantel piece now.
^^^ LOL that didn't help him much eh?
Anyways, you'll need to take the heatsink off and check for any damage or AS5 spillage on the card. Use some isopropyl alcohol and try cleaning it off and applying the AS5 again.
Also make sure there's sufficient contact (there probably is though).
Hopefully the card isn't toast. Good luck...

If you accidentally bridge the solder points for resisters on the chip's packaging you can cause it to do funny things

yeah, first take off the sink again, check to see if you got AS on any of the little resistors, then check the core to make sure you didnt chip it. then re-apply the sink firmly making sure it has good contact. then make sure it's seated in the AGP slot properly.

k, core's fine, it's an r360 :D uh.... yeah it looks as if the stock thermal paste, which is really horrible and difficult, got in between some resistors, but they are a bitch to get anything in between them. i see the silver lining around them (the resistors being the only other thing on the chip that stick up other than the core i hope :P) i guess i'll just keep plugging at it. jtracc20, ow... lol. i didn't think this was the "stock-clockers forums" the whole point was to gain maybe 5mhz more, which, while it may not sound like a lot, could mean the difference in resolution levels, and graphic hardware levels, and bragging rights. by the way people, if the card's dead, what would you recommend i get in the realm of pci-e, between the price range of about 300-400 CANADIAN (lol). don't be shy to recommend nvidia if you truly believe it will be worth it. i'm gonna go sli because mainly it spreads out how much i have to spend on video stuff. but yeah, i will continue to rub away at this damn card, and i'll be back with an update.
by the way if you haven't heard, dimebag darrell was shot dead a while ago. RIP.

you need to take the hs back off and clean really well around the core.
those little caps on there will get as5 on them and short out.
get a magnifing glass and look closely at them.
as5 is somewhat conductive.
