I put the 36gig raptor in formatted it and installed windows and so im on my desktop and getting the newest nvidia drivers and i start hearing a clicking and i get a lil yellow caution icon in my system tray says Hard Error, I really cant do much at this point so I rebooted and I start hearing a clicking and then the sound of the hard drive spinning and then a click and then the hard drive spin, etc etc. and I never see the Windows Xp Starting up screen .
Is it dead, a lil help ?
thank you

i would advise getting the diagnostic software from western digital and run it against the drive, see what comes up. I don't believe there's anyway someone can tell you from your post if the drive is dead, although it doesn't sound good. You can send it to me and i'll test it for ya :D.

Yes, you need the WD drive diagnostic tool, and that appears to be it.
Unless you have cabling issues that's a bad drive for sure. It happens, unfortunately. Small consolation, but at least WD RMA is good.

i havent ran the diagnostic on the raptor yet. ive been somewhat busy .
i only have 1 machine , i bought the raptor and then was going to clear my old wd 40gig and use it for storage. im glad i decided to wait on clearing it as now the raptor isnt working properly. so my question is, can i test the raptor with the Diagnostic tool from my 40gig that im on ?

this sounds crazy but i had hds failed on me and i just bang the side of it on the floor a couple of times and pop the drive back in and works everytime. i am still using the hd right now since a year ago when i did that "trick", i tried it on other hd and it worked also :)

Congratulations! The Data Lifeguard Diagnositc utility has determined that your hard drive is functioning properly. If you still encounter problems on your hard drive that you feel were not identified in the Data Lifeguard utility, please contact us for technical support.
On the Raptor, I went to 'view test results' and under drive type, it says 'IDE" , is it supposed to say that ? is that a sign that i need a new sata cable ? but what about those spinning to loud clicking sounds ?
wow with the quick test you can really hear that raptor spin,

yup yup!
What 500w PSU (but I think the HDD is dead. Clicking from a harddrive is NEVER good and in my experience means damage is done.)
I had a harddrive die and start clicking from overheating once. The click one a steady and reletivly quite one.

Describe the click sound you are hearing. Is it a constant grinding sound? Or is it a repetitive click.
BTW, the post about banging a hard drive on the ground is obviuosly ridiculous if anyone wasn't already certain - there is nothing about a hard drive's mechanics which could be fixed by giving it a whack, though it might make you feel better for a second or two.

haha yea, i dont plan on banging the raptor on anything.
its a Aspire power supply.

Sounds like to me that it is a seek error on the head. You could always do what they did with Deathstars; turn them upside down. May or may not work.

You sure you didn't accidently test your 40GB?
I don't care what anyone says, a clicking hard disk that spins and makes noise is not a reliable drive. Don't wait for it to crap, just RMA it.

did you do the 'extended' tests?
and yea, make sure you're testing the right drive.

yea, i did do the right drive, i did it twice. dunno what to say.
ill call WD tomarrow and get the RMA going.

The complete test is the one that should be read, but I have tested first hand hard drives with what I think is a similar click to what you explained (its hard without actually hearing it), and they have passed the complete disk diagnostic test, then died a couple weeks later. I always backup though before I even test, and I always advise people to save to their network allocation, so nothing is lost when this happens.
The quick test isn't actually quick, it just doesn't do as much so it doesn't take as long. ;)
In my experience, in our agreement it is more of a hassle to get a replacement if the diagnostic does not return an error code, but you can still get one if you explain the situation. I have not worked with western digital though, but from earlier comments it sounds like it woudl be fairly easy to RMA, and that is what I would recommend.
