View Full Version : I need to vent ...Maxtor and converters stink!

Okay, I place my order from New Egg for a couple of IDE-SATA converters. I'm too cheap to buy new drives even though mine have only 2mb cache. I install the converters, which each take a small molex power plug of which my P/S has two. I use my laptop's USB floppy, so I don't have one installed in this system. I hook up the serial and start setting up a RAID with my 100 and 60 GB (I know I was losing 20 GB, but I have plenty). I start loading Windows, hit F6 when I should and Windows does its thing....until.... it tells me to put the floppy in the A drive. Apparently MS needs a real A drive and not the USB. So that's a bust. I could just get an adapter for another small plug and install a floppy, but I figure it's time to step up and set a RAID-0 up correctly. I buy 2 SATA 120 GB w/ 8 cache drives. Before I even bought them I asked several times if the drives had a standard 4 pin legacy power. I was assured they did. He even showed me the owners manual stating both new and old were on the drives. I come home, install the floppy, rip open the first drive and lo and behold, no 4 pin legacy power. There's even a little insert with the drive saying not to use both types at once. Kinda hard when there is only one? :bang head I'm praying the local shop has the 4 pin to serial adapters so I can get this thing finally up and running on RAID. I'm glad I didn't format my other boot drive....at least I can use it for now!

I hope my rant will save someone else a headache later on.

BTW, I also broke one of the clips from the SATA (it still plugs in tight) connection on my mobo and accidentally unplugged my CPU fan (for about 5 seconds before I noticed and hit the power supply off). I guess I shouldn't have even opened the case today.
