Hey guys...

I'm planning on slowly building another rig, and I want to use the ram out of my computer now to do it. Therefore, I've found an excuse to buy upgraded ram!

woo!

So I'm looking to spend around 200 bucks.. I want some ram that I will be able to get a good overclock when I get my XP-M on water. I also would like the ram to still be useful when I upgrade to 64 an run a decent overclock.

I'm looking at PC4000 on newegg, and see a few options.

$179 Patriot

$204 Geil

I know that there is some real good Patriot ram with TCCD chips, but this is cheaper than that ram is. Its rated for the speed, but will it perform? Are either of these TCCD? Are there any other good products in my range that will suit me better? I figure if I get my computer now to say 225 fsb, I could try lowering the timings on one of these higher performance sticks, and then change it back when Im going for high fsb (or whatever its called :- p ) on A64.

Besides, both of these ram's have better timing than my pc3200 does now :-]

corsair is regarded as one of the top quality, find what you want and search for reviews, no advise can subsitute resourcefullness.

corsair...

I know that corsair is good.. of course, I have the cheapo corsair in my computer and I can barely overclock it at all.

But the corsair ram thats pc4000 on new egg is 50+ dollars more than that patriot.. For the same speed rating / timings.

I read some reviews.. but mostly all of them were "good ram.." I was looking for more of a "yes, that ram is good for your socket a system, and it wont suck for your A64 either" or "you really aught to get the geil.. its worth the extra 20"

Is the corsair really worth the extra cash? I guess thats my question.

well the reviews should at least tell you what FSB, timings, and at which voltages they were able to reach as they upped the FSB. neoseeker.com is rather useful. I'd say Corsair is worth it as the resale value holds better with a good name and you won't have these till the day you die.

If I had to choose, I'd get the corsair, if i had money restrictions that made $50 really count, i'd get the geil and sacrifice $20. There is something to be said for reputation but the reviews should really be your key, whatever meets ur needs at the lowest cost. (ie, if you're only going to run 166fsb, why buy pc3200?). Keep in mind that timings hurt bandwidth a fraction of what a lower clock will.

No, Corsair is not worth the cash. Get the Patriot, for crying out loud. If they both use TCCD, then it doesn't matter who makes it. "What's in a name?"

I've seen some awesome results from Patriot over at xtremesystems.org. I don't think you'll be disappointed as long as you get something with TCCD, but it might as well be cheap.
