I have a machine that I need to get linux off of and load win 98 on to, can I do it with a 98 startup disk or do I need to do something else?
thanks guys.
Boot from a DOS bootdisk, run FDISK to remove Ext2 partitions and add FAT 32 ones. Don't forget to activate the primary partition so it becomes bootable.
Restart your system with the bootdisk and format the partitions. Don't forget to copy system files to the primary one.
After that is done, run "FDISK /MBR". Many people tend to forget doing this, and the drive will still try to boot from LILO. The /MBR parameter overwrites the Master Boot Record with Win/DOS system.

I don't believe dos/windows fdisk will see ext2 partitions, you might have to get a linux boot disk, to delete the partitions or use partition magic boot disk.

Yeah, Fdisk will see linux partitions, but won't say they are. It'll say it's some "Non-Dos partition". Just go to option 3, delete the non-dos partition (in your case, Linux partition), and create new Fat32 partitions. Then, format, and install windows

Yes, Win's fdisk will ID the present Linux partition(s) as "Non-DOS" partitions. Just delete them, then re-create any needed FAT partition(s). Remember to set the "C:\" partition as active for Win 9x. Remember to "fdisk /mbr" from a Win 9x boot floppy! Then reinstall Win9x.
