View Full Version : Has anyone ever had problems with large pumps around hard drives?

I see how my l35 makes my monitor shake by being closer than a foot away, has anyone ever lost data due to the magnetism from a large pump?
Impossible for it it do so. The magnetic fields emanating from a pump would have to be strong enough to move any ferro-magnetic item not nailed down within about 3 feet of the pump before it even begins to have a hope of damaging data stored on a HDD.
Ever pulled open a dead HDD and noticed the two extremely strong disk head actuator rare-earth magnets sitting not more than 5mm away from the disk platter - all without a remote chance of harm to the data stored on the disk.

Yes, and I have also seen one hold onto a ~15Lb broad sword in the air.

well thats good to know, i have seen stranger things happen though, like a magnet interfering with the actuators or the spindle motors on the underside of the hard drive. i suppose its not so much the platters i would worry about. but it seems to make since to me, thanks for the input :)
oh and you guys do some awesome work cathar keep it up!

The only time I've seen issues with metal and hard drives was on this window mod I did on a couple of hard drives. If you got even neutral metal near the coil, it would park and reset. Kinda funny to see, probably not so funny to the drive ;). But when properly shielded (the manufacturer's top is still on in other words), there is no way a pump or most household items will interfere.
I have a bunch of those hard drive magnets on my fridge. Wife loves them, they can hold a book to the fridge if you want them too :)
