I'm thinking about putting togeither a nice "little" file server for my house. I really want to go the dual processor route, but I don't really like the selection of dual AMD boards out so far. Anyone know when Abit, Asus or any of the other major board manufacturers are going to start releasing new boards? Also, I've been wondering. Will I be required to buy the new MP Anthlons for this or can I use a pair of T-Birds or Durons to help keep the cost down?

I have heard that Asus has a dual t-bird board. might want to check the site for details. The best idea is to go to the closest computer store and see if thay can get a hold of a dual board for you.

So far only Tyan has dual amd boards and the other major mobo makers have not said when they will release dual boards but hopefully it will be within the next few months.

Edit* Gigabyte has also released a new board in Japan but it will not be on sale until November and even then you would have to go to Japan to pick it up:(

Here is a review (http://www.amdmb.com/article-display.php?ArticleID=114) of the new Tyan Tiger mobo it looks really awesome except there are no overclocking options, and its a lot cheaper than the original Tyan Thunder.

I'm very seriously considering getting one. I just don't think I can wait for the other boards to be released.

Yeah. I keep hearing about other companies releasing new dual athlon boards but none have followed up. I need a new computer for work and a tyan dual setup is being considered. If did get one it would be the thunder becuase it has all those extra onboard features like video, ehternet, and scsi, but if i just wanted to upgrade my currnet system i would get the tiger cuz its a lot cheaper and i would my video card..etc.

I wandered over to [H] yesterday and they had a pic of a Gigabyte dual socket A board, but all the text they linked to was in Japanese... anyone have any provision for translation?

Knowing Gigabyte, it won't have much provision for overclocking, though.

I don't have a translation. This is all the info I have been able to find on it so far.

It will use the AMD 760MP chipset, support up to 4GB of memory, include two PCI-64 and two PCI-32 slots, have PDC 267 RAID 0, 1, and 0+1, have one AGP Pro slot, and Intel 82559 LAN capabilities

Probably not much support for overclocking.

I tried... I don't have the Japanese language support installed and I am at work right now so I don't have access to a WinNT cd to install the language pack.

Can someone else babelfish it?

Gigabyte's aren't known for incorporating a lot of overclocker friendly features... I built a system with a Duron 800 and a 7ZX board in February and found no provision for multiplier o/c. I'll bet my faithful little Duron chip that it has more tweaks and FSB settings than the Tiger K7 though, and with a set of golden sockets may be passable for o/c if none of the big players (read Abit, Iwill and MSI) come through with a dual socket A board pretty soon.

If you want a bullet-proof server why wouldn't you use the tyan board? You really shouldn't overclock a server. That's just my opinion.

I'm not looking to set up a server.... if I buy an MP socket A board it will be for my personal box. After using a dual P2 400 this summer (and seeing how well it multitasked) I am sold on the benefits of SMP. That box, with 512 MB of PC100 performed just as well as my single processor Duron system, and that box was over 2 years old! Especially now that MS's mainstream OS is dual-capable, it makes more sense now than it did a year or two ago. NOT THAT I LIKE M$..... It's just undeniable that if you want ease of use, wide software selection and the greatest compatibility, Windows just works.

There is a market for a good overclocking dual board - look at how the BP6 took off 2 years ago! And the VP6 continues to be the SMP board of choice for many overclockers and enthusiasts.

I'll be building a box, hopefully, with dual 1 GHz Morgans, 1 GB of PC2100 and a Geforce 3 MX. I wake every day with eager anticipation that Abit or MSI has released their dual board.

Just my view on everything.

Yeah.. i am going for one of those tyans too for a personal super system. Anu news on how the dual duron morgans perform compared to the athlon mp's?

I agree about the advantages of smp. I had an old dual Celeron 433 box that was pretty nice. I accidently burnt up the motherboard by not seating the ram properly.

I am going to set up a tyan box with my 2 1ghz tbirds (both un-overclockable ARGA steppings) and use that as my regular work computer rendering video and stuff.
