View Full Version : Which power line is best for 6800gt?

I was wondering this because I know that the card draws a lot of power, and was wondering which of the three power lines coming out of the PSU to connect it to. One powers two harddrives, the second powers 2 cd drives and a floppy, and the third runs the fans (3x 80mm through a fan controler running them at slow speed). Would one be best, or does it not matter? I don't have the card yet, but it should be here monday! My power supply is an Antec truepower 550 watt.
Thanks,
Noah

best bet is a line that has nothing attached, but if you can't do that then the first molex in a run is the best.

Though it doesn't really matter too much, I would use the line with the floppy since you probably won't be using those and taxing the 6800 at the same time.

do you have a 6800 card? Those suckers suck a ton of joice. But the floppy would be the best line.

That sounds logical. Games uses the cd drive to start, but dont really use it once they are open, so that line should be unused, and the floppy is basically never used.

Floppy line would be just fine, yes they suck a lot but with the limited use of that line it should be just fine.

i hacked a power line from an AT power supply to make an "extension" cord for a power line. it attached to the floppy drive and provided me with two extra 4-pin molex connectors. these are attached to my cd-roms. this opened up a line to the PSU with nothing on it so my vid card has all the juice it wants...

Using a splitter, I think I will be able to move the cd drives and floppy onto the same line as the fans, thus freeing up a line to be dedicated for the card. Now I just have to survive the wait for the shipment... Just out of interest, how much of the card's power does it get from the slot and how much does it rely on the power line for?

Its from the 12v line directally. 6800s draw almost no power from the slot itself. Power range is in the 200w range last I heard. Probly too high tho.
