hi guys, i have cable modem leased from my ISP (adelphia)
and i do some research on motorola SB5100
and finnaly i bought one, but when i replacing it with SB5100 , (which it think it suppose to run faster) my speed is cut in half

before i can get 1.5 Mb down..and now it only 700-800 Mb (with SB5100)

is there any setting to tweak this modem?

my old modem is com21 used for 3 or 4 year already
and the SB5100 is still new

Thanks

Can you access the modem settings, meaning does it have an IP address where you can go into IE, enter that IP address and access the modem's settings and properties?

Edit:
Also, it's possible you connection might have been capped due to a diff MAC address...see if you can clone the MAC address from the original modem

mac addres has nothing to do with a cap .. its just an ID tool used..

and i dont believe you can clone cable modems mac address only a router since its not the direct communication source to you isp provider...

its possible that your modem just doesnt perfrom as well..
try to hit the rest button on your modem and then unplug for a few ten minutes..

if that doesnt work change back to old one and see if it goes back to the way it was...

Are you using the SB5100 connected to a seperate NIC card or the built in USB connection on the modem (modems built in NIC) ?

Your ISP provider may not be Docsis 2.0 compliant with the newer standard incorporated in the SB5100 ( call your ISP provider to find out)

You may also want to try using DRTCP (http://www.dslreports.com/drtcp) or TCP OPTIMISER (http://www.speedguide.net/downloads.php) and tweak your TCP settings to see if that helps .

my ISP is adelphia.. have check their modem recommend list
and found that SB5100 is on their list..and i think adelphia is docsis2.0

and i'm using the ethernet one.. not the usb
it is conected through router also..(but same configuration with the other modem and still produce only half of speed)

ask some other friends, they said it might be the modem cap..

is there any way to remove the modem cap?..

Have you called Adelphia and told them you have a new modem you would like to use?

That's the first thing I would do.

Obviouly to avoid the monthly lease fee. I have Adelphia too. Call them at 1-888-683-1000 and explain it to them.

yap.. thats what i do first time, and they said just plug the new modem..that's all you need...

no explanation why it become slower...

and yeah, i bought just to avoid 5.00/ month modem lease..which i should do years ago

In that case, I'd exchange it for another one in case yours is defective somehow. There really isn't any configuration to be done, and there's no reason for you to have to try and tweak your computer just to get back to the speeds you used to have.

I know with my ISP (Charter) I have to tell them which modem I am installing so they can configure my connection from their end.

Maybe since you are not leasing their modem, they are punishing you for it! You kow how some companies are about losing revenue!

you have to call them to give them the Mac Address located on the sticker that comes with the modem they need to put it into there computers and update them i know this as i used to work for a Cable company called Cox Communications and when we installed new modems that customers purchased and got rid of their old ones they do this to stop piracy and also if you had any of the old modem software in you need to remove it as it may be causing conflicts also you might want to redo your tcp/ip settings you know ipconfig release renew and if that doesnt work i would call your cable company

Also, if you're on XP or 2k, you may want to reinstall your TCP/IP protocol in your Network Control Panel.

yeah, if you havnt called and given them the new mac address that you're usin it wont give the new modem the right settings to use (caps and whatnot) you should call them and tell them you're using your own modem and they should ask for the mac address to activate it and disactivate the old modem form access.

like i said i think its just a modem swap problem they send a file to the modem so the modem knows where its sending info to and where its recieving from
