Hey All,
I have an *old* system that I overclocked a couple of years ago, it is an Abit BH6 with a Celeron 300a chugging along at what used to be a blazing 450mhz!

I have 192mb of pc100 ram.

I am thinking of getting a celeron 566 and going with 8.5x100, since I hear that is fairly common. (I have been out of the PC loop for a while) :D

Can anyone reccomend a vendor that will sell me the CPU, slotket, and a decent heatsink/fan all in one sale? I know of a few vendors who sell each, but I want to get all three from the same vendor to save on shipping costs.

I would like to buy from an overclocker-friendly vendor, but I have been out of the loop too long.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Drew - Still running the 300a!

Welcome.

Try www.newegg.com
I don't know they have celeron chips that old, but you could get a newer 800 celeron chip relatively cheap and run it stock, or grab a few sticks of cheap PC 133 RAM and overclock it. You should still be able to use the BH6 motherboard with a bios update and the 800 celeron.

if you want a 566 you can try looking at pricewatch.com or perhaps you could wait two weeks until I get my p3 1ghz chip and give me an email.

Pinky,
According to Abit, the fastest chip the BH6 can support is ~700mhz:

"Supports Pentium III/Celeron 450-700mhz"

Now, since I have heard of people running a C566 at 8.5x100, I would suspect the motherboard is capable of operating at clock speeds faster than 700mhz. However, I have been out of the the PC world for a couple of years and am not sure that the 800mhz Celeron comes in a form factor/voltage that would work with the board.

Abit only lists one Bios update, which doesn't seem to be recent at all.

I have been out of touch since the Pentium II/Celeron I days, and am looking for a project to dust off the old brain cells.

My motherboard is a Slot-1, so I need a slotket to convert one of the PPGA type cpu's.

I found the following CPU on Newegg:

CPU PENTIUM II/CELERON 850 Mhz 128k L2 cache
FCPGA Celeron 850 FC-PGA form factor (370pin socket)

I could use the Slotket with the FC-PGA, but do you think this older motherboard can handle the 850? I haven't been able to find any testomonials for BH6 users, but of course I am just getting back into things and am trying to remember the hottest message boards for overclocking, etc.

Thanks for the ideas,
Drew

I have the BH6 R1, not 1.1. So it looks like it won't take anything fast...

"(my mobo)...do not support Coppermine CPUs due to the native design of power for the CPU core voltage probably not being sufficient. So to avoid
instability, we advise that the afore mentioned boards do not support
Coppermine CPUs. "

It looks lke I have a choice of the following celerons to overclock

633(66),667(66),700(66)MHz

Has one of these been particularly popular for overclocking in recent times? (excuse me while I catch up as fast as I can)

Thanks
Drew

ahh if it takes coppermine chips then it should be able to take any coppermine chip.

I just ordered a p3 1ghz chip for my abit bx6 2 motherboard and its only suppose to support up to 700 mhz chips but i've seen alot of people put in higher chips. someone last week put a p3 1ghz in a abit bx6.

my celly is running at 952mhz in my bx6 2 right now. you might be supprized at what you mb can do.

do a little research man. i think you can do better than you think.

abit will just feed you lies about how overclocking is bad and how nothing works that hasnt been approved by them. kind of sad.

oh yea and intel just released a bunch of new cdo chips in slot one form too. i think they did a 700, 800, 850, and 1 ghz. all 100 fsb.

the chip i ordered was a 1 ghz cdo stepping 100 fsb 370 pin array.

Yes, a Celeron 566 will easily run at 850+ on a BH6, I have personal experience. If fact, I believe my old C-566 it's the same CPU that Ebona now has. If you use a good quality slotket, a higher CPU than you listed will work. At the very most, you might have to do a BIOS update, which is a good thing anyway.

Ahhh... I guess you'd have to manually set the bus speed... it will probably boot as a 66MHZ bus...

But anyway, we're still working with old technology and newer chips... I think coppermines will run on just about any board, with the correct settings. You need to remember Abit does not officially endorse overclocking, even if they offer the options. They won't advertise that a chip will run at a certain speed unless the default settings will run at those speeds. Just tweak and go.

I'll buy the chip from you for what you paid if it doesn't work :). I put my money where my mouth is, which is probably why I haven't made my first million yet. lol
