I am getting close to building another system. Since the new system will likely have the Via 686B southbridge (either AMD761 or Via KT266A), I want a sound card that is NOT an SBLive! derivative.

I would like it to be 5.1 and DTS compatible (same thing?).

Does anybody have any experience with the Turtle Beach and Philips sound cards? Can somebody recommend a good card?

TIA,

Anthony

Turtle Beach santa cruz gets my vote. I know someone that has one and brags about it all the time.

You know, the SB Audigy is a different card! Different DAC and onboard TI IEEE1394. I picked one up on Friday and it sounds great. No clicking or pops like the ones caused by the VIA 686B USB controller and the Live! cards. It's worth a shot.

Additonally, I would go for one of the $99 flavors. The pricing on the EX and Platinum are outrageous for what you get.

i would stay away with turtle beach. i had one and hated it, had all these wierd glitches to it (pops, inability to run multiple sounds, etc). go with the audigy, i like it alot.

Compusa has the Turtle Beach on sale for 59.99

My buddy from work is picking me up one... I'll get to see first hand what you mean (I think turtle beach addresses these issues on their site, another buddy at work has one on XP and says their fix works fine and the card's great).

Yeah - Hercules Game Theatre XP - his does rock. Loudly.
The cable from the card to the controller is one of the thickest shielded cables I've ever seen on a PC.

Although a SB Live! does me fine just now..........
