I just set up my girlfriend's and my computers in my townhouse on a Linksys switch. I'm trying to set up a network so we can share a printer and whatnot, but i cant figure it out.

So far, i can see my computer and her computer in the same workgroup from my computer, but cant view the contents of her computer (i.e. shared folder, printers, etc) - permission denied. From her computer, clicking on view workgroup results in 'workgroup not found' crap.

Both computers have windows xp firewall disabled. The internet is working fine on both. I cannot ping her, nor can she ping me (through the network).

Any suggestions?

workgroup name the same? file and printer sharing ON? you must set up a file to share on..enable guest accts ....set passwords on them so you must enter it...

ok, current situation is: i can see MSHOME (the workgroup) and I can see my girlfriends computer (as well as myself) when i click on her i get access denied.

she can see MSHOME on her computer, but when she tries to navigate to it, she gets access denied.

What is in the middle keeping these star crossed lovers apart?!

Go into commputer management and make sure that the server service is set to atuo and is running, next go into you NIC proprties and make sure that the box for file and print shareing is checked.

nice triple post then another :) hehe
but to the question, right click on my computer, properties - remote, allow remote invitations.try that, when i first got my laptop i had the same problem. firewall is not the problem here, you just need to allow access to the computer

Remote invitations is for Remote Assistance, nothing to do with sharing folders/printers.

Try running the network setup wizard again. I believe that windows sets up file and printers sharing so that only a certain class and/or network block of ip addresses can see it. If that fails, try running ipconfig in dos, and make sure that each computer is using the correct ip network connection properties. An example is like this.

IP ADDRESS: 192.168.0.X <-- The X will be different for each computer, but they will all have the first three sub digits.
SUBNET MASK: 255.255.255.0 <-- This is also important because the computer needs to know what type of network you're running on. A class C network is generally fine for home networks as I don't think you need a million ip addresses.
GATEWAY: 192.168.0.Y <-- This is the ip of the router, or device that connects your computers to the internet. Most of the times it'll be 192.168.0.1. If you're using a router, it should have DHCP enabled meaning it can assign private ip addresses according to the network it is running on automatically. If you have any further questions, let me know. Networking can get tricky sometimes, but you'll pull through. Good luck :)

thanks, that's all it was. firewalls. I did just what you said matrix, allowed 192.168.1.0 on subnet 255.255.255.0

I have zonealarm which did that automatically, but the other computer was running norton IS, which is not so intuative.

Thanks,
David
