Half-LIfe crashes after replacing HD

My PM died and I had to rebuild my system. Now Half-life and all mods crash randomly, there seems to be no one place in the game where it crashes and locks up system.

I've got:

Athlon 600 @ 600 (blush)
ASUS K7M
256 meg RAM
Geforce2 MX
SBLive Value
20 Gig Maxtor Diamond Max 7200 rpm
directx 8.0a
M$ Win 98SE

I've already updated ALL drivers and moved my cards around .
I've got latest versions of HL and Firearms (cant play online without them)
Only interupt thats shared is USB and Sound card.
Connect to net thru 100 base LAN w/ Roadrunner.

Any help is appreciated.

PS: Maddman is already at wits end trying to figure this one out.

i'm assuming u've tried reinstalling...

try uninstalling, then deleting everything from ur HL directory, then reinstalling it...


does it crash in single-player HL too, or just online?

been there done that...reinstalled windows and game

and yes it crashes the system in single player also

Tried a thurough/Full ScanDisk? Mabye the drive has physical errors on it.

yes even though its a new drive

It's a new drive and it seems to me it's giving you more trouble than it's worth . . . what I suggest is you go to Maxtor's website, (http://maxtor.com/Maxtorhome.htm) download their hard drive utility, (http://maxtor.com/softwaredownload/Maxtor_Downloads.htm) and run their diagnostics. If you get an error, call tech support and they'll likely be more than happy to replace your drive. If you don't get an error code, then re-zero the drive and try again. (And yes, this kills EVERYTHING on the hard drive.)
