View Full Version : Port Forwarding gone bad on XP

I wanted to forward a port so a program I use could work online (I am behind a router)
I tried to do this initially through the router settings, but it would not work, so I went to my network connections.
My network connections always shows:
a) High Speed Internet connection
b) Local Area Network
I tried to configure port forwarding for the high-speed connection, First group of settings did not work. For some stupid reason I decided I would put 0 in for one of the ports.
Pressed ok, and now High-speed internet connection does not appear anymore and I cannot change these settings.
Any idea how I could get this back to the default setup of having just the two there (I have tried a system restore from yesterday as well as uninstalling NIC card and reinstalling)
Thanks!

i dont believe you want the port forwarding option.. you just want to go into applications and games (linksys ) and assign a port range for it ..
you can always hit the reset button on the back of you router .. the i would unplug router and cable modem for about 30 seconds and then plug router in let it intitialize then your modem.. should be back in buisness..

I don't think you understand my problem.
My high-speed connection has disapeared and it has saved settings in there which I do not want and can no longer access them due to this.

are you saying when you check under network connections you dont get anything?? doesnt show your nic cards ??
if you type Network Connections into the browser address bar is this screen what you are talking about ??

The screen where it shows all your lan cards, "View Network Connections"
It ussually lists my High-Speed Internet connection, and then my LAn card, as Local Area Connection.
I don't know where it went and I can no longer change settings for it.
That 'High-speed Connection' is the Universal Plug and Play discovery of the router. The fact it is now gone is a bit strange, so I'd check the configuration of the router and make sure UPNP is still enabled. The changes you make in XP to a UPNP device should also be visable in the devices web-config, so check the port forwarding to make sure everything is configured correctly.

thanks! and thanks kct2, i played around with upnp settings and put my router to factory default settings and everything network related stopped working on my computer for like 5 minutes and then all the sudden it popped back up again!
Like Xtreme Barton, I am going to do this all hardware.
So lets say I want to open port 2000.
I just set the range to 2000 - 2000 ?
yeah 2000-2000 and just check the little box and make sure the IP that your forwarding it too is your computers IP.

do you have a linksys i take it ??
the easiest way is to typ in the name of the program and then select the exact port it uses.. type in sor example like you did above 2000 and 2000.. then the next option is to choose udp and some other one.. i would type each seperate and then click enable.. make sure at the end of everything when you have to put your ip in that you eneter it correctly ...
it read 192.168.1.0 at the end ... by default mine is 192.168.1.1 so dont forget to check and change that 0 into a 1 on the end .. otherwise it wont do didly ...
this is sometimes useful into troubleshooting ..
http://www.linksys.com/tech_helper/config.html
also to check your ip if you dont know already .. one way is
start button run type in cmd and hit ok.. then type in ipconfig
it will list what nic your using by name and then your ip that you should be using for port forwarding..
