If you truly want to learn how to program learn C, not C++, good old C. This will let you learn what is going on, not just using some packaged tool and having no clue what it does. Once you learn what is going on with a good language like C then other languages are easy, the syntax is just different.
If all you want is to play around, VB can be fun.
Get some big books on C and go through them, it shouldn't take long to pick up the basics.

The visual languages are not very good for learning. Every thing is very high level and in packages. You do not really learn what it is doing and some of the cool things you can do that are not in the packages.

Which is why I suggested one of the big books. Anyway you can still code by hand in the visual apps they just make it easier with the interface side of things.

I would recommend taking an hour to learn basic, then learn c. I have 2 books for learning c++, but both assume you know c. I also just picked up a VB book, but I'll see what online stuff I can find on c first.
Anyway about basic, you really can start to write programs in an hour. In two days I learned it on my calc, if you have a graph calc then you basicaly know basic. Great for tests, especialy HS chem when it comes to convertions and great for trig also.
