View Full Version : CS: Source - A Free Equivalent To Planetside

Okay, I don't want to start any arguments here: I am just wondering about something.

We all know that CS: Source is a great game, involving amazing multiplayer shoot-outs etc. Although probably not the best game of all time, it was FREE (Well, nearly - it came free with HL2)

Now I've talked to people who've played Planetside and they have said that they got the same kind of thrills you get out of CS: Source - but after a while they thought "why pay money each month for basically just taking over base after base?" so they ended their subscriptions. Sure, it was a good game - but not good enough to warrant monthly payments.

Now that's what I'd think about CS: Source - while it's great, no way would I pay for it each month! It isn't quite that good.

So why do people pay for games like Planetside each month, when they could just buy CS: Source (in a HL2 package) for the price of one month's subscription to Planetside? From what I've heard, the two are pretty similar.

I haven't played Planetside though, so what makes it so good that people opt for it over an amazing subscription-free game like CS?

They are addictive :D look at people playing WoW and EQ.

I personally hate playing for a game each month after I have already bought it for 50 bucks.

I've never played planetside, but I did think it looked cool, but paying for it, then only being able to use it for a month til I had to start paying for it never hooked me.

But yeah cs:s is amazing :D

Yeah, that's what I don't understand.

Sure CS: Source is a really cool game, but you wouldn't pay a monthly fee for it. But then why is Planetside still popular in the face of the likes of free cool/very similar games like CS: Source?

To any Planetside fans, please do not take this as criticism. I have not ever played the game, so I cannot make a comparison - I just know people who loved the game, but said "no way" to paying for it month-after-month for "what's essentially one base-conquering scenario after another." It's those kind of people that CS: Source is perfect for.

To anyone who plays Planetside, what makes it so great over other multiplayer FPS to pay for on a monthly basis? I can understand why people would play Planetside for its sheer addictive enjoyment, but not when there's games like CS: Source - equally addictive yet subscription-free.

I don't know about Planetside specifically, but one of the big attractions of MMOs is playing in a persistant world with the same people.

CS:S isn't persistant; the maps reset ever X number of minutes; heck, once a round is over, everything resets.

In an MMO like DAOC, once you took over a castle, that castle was yours. You could log out, go to bed, get online the next night and find your guild still holding the castle, and you could join in the defense of it.

They are very different types of games.

To answer that, you need only one word:

SCALE

I have not played CS:S, but Im guessing you can not have 200+ people playing at once. That is what planetside has. I quit playing PS a long time ago, mainly due to the sh**ty physics engine and constant bugfixes; but, if you can stand all that, its one h*** of a game - nothing else compares.

Because it has guns and an objective doesn't mean the 2 games are similar in ANY way.

Wow... I have to say, the comparison is the most outlandish comparison I have ever seen regarding Planetside. The Tribes thing gets tossed around a lot because of the outdoors and somewhat multiple bases thing, but CS:S and PS???

Admittadly you guys haven't played PS, but if you are wondering WHY a guy like me pays to play PS, it can't be explained in terms of how many different types of assaults and battles you can experience. But one of the definitive things you get when you have people paying to play a game is serious gamers. There is a very low population of retards, and a grief system that punishes friendly fire in a strict way.

LOL CS:S and PS being compared... still can't get over it. Both great games, but 'shooter' is the only similarity if you can even make one.

I have friends that say that the sub cost is preventing them from playing, then they go and spend 50$-200$ on other games every month because they get board of the latest WW2 shooter or thousanth counterstike match that unfolds in the same way each time. I'm the one saving money in the end.
