I have a few hundred movies (Oh bittorrent, how I love thee :D ). I want to put the files on dvd but I want to fit a bunch on one disk. I would like to know what file compression software I can use (the free'er the better). I would like to compress a 700meg file down to 350-400megs if that's even possible.
Any help would be nice.

At 700megs each they have already been compressed somehow. The most popular ways are using Divx and Xvid. You can fit 6 700meg movies on one DVD or 11 400meg movies on one DVD. You would have to recompress the video again in order to shrink the size and that makes the quality go down. Divx can be free but you will learn more on their website and Xvid is free.

Yup only way your going to get more onto that DVD is either recompress everything again to a lower quality. Or get a dual layer DVD burner and some discs and start filling it up.
There would be no other way of compressing it that considerably.
If you want to compress them with 3rd party software (winrar (http://www.rarlab.com/) is a great one) you won't be able to compress them any further, it will probably be a few hundred kb's smaller but thats it.
As said above, to make a movie smaller you need to re-encode it, but that will kill the quality.
