[long story]
:bday: i was just calling dell tech support yeterday without really meaning to claim anything just to talk to a tek guy for the heck of it. i found out some pretty good stuff like my mobo can handle bolth baninis (1.7ghz) and dothlan cores up to 2.1ghz (i thought it could only take bianis) and also learned that holding the power button for 20 secs with the battery out will do a bios reset. he also told me that i am able to install third party (cpu, graphics card) hardware in my laptop without voiding the warranty just that the 3rd party parts won't be covered by dell...

[/long story]

well i was running out of stuff to ask but somehow i remembered that one of the rubber feet where missing on the bottom and asked if it could be replaced. he immeadelately took care of it for me and told me it would arrive on friday.

well i ended up getting the replacement part less than 18 hours after our conversation (thursday) and came with an extera spare.

this makes me feel really good about my warranty, i know now that if i have a warranty issue in the future that it will be ez to take care of. somehow it makes spending that extera $300 worth it. :)

Thats good news, I was always under the impression that once you open it up, you void the warranty.

I also was planning on ditching the celery 2.6 in my beast for something a little more faster and perhaps bettery battery power then this pos desktop cpu.

So basically if I open up my XPS and use some AS5 to cool this bad boy down, I won't be voiding the warranty. This is good news indeed.

Thing is you need to order 6000 of those 5cent thingers to make the 300 dollar warrenty worth while.

the warranty has special rules and it's very reccomended that you use dell parts and i added accadential damage to my warranty but i think the feet are covered in the plain warranty. the catch is that the warranty is void if you mess up (and fry the comp) installing the part if it's not a dell part. the manual for opening the laptop up is somewhere on support.dell.com and thus i would say it's ok to openit up for upgrades.

just keep your eyes open for those "warranty void if removed or broken" stickers and there's no way they can tell you where in there in the first place.

You forget the convience factor. I'd pay $300 if its worth it.

If you pay for that service yes - your school likely paid for the onsite 2, or 3 year warrenty

Dell does have good support - most of the time.

They always send out replacement parts fast.

I ordered a camera, got an empty box. Called them at 4 pm EST, had a new camera there at 11 AM the next day.

Twice I've had to replace CD drives in laptops (we have a lot of Dells), both times they have been there the next day.

We have an 8000 series desktop that we use for builds that has been locking up randomly. RAM failed a diag test, we got replacement RAM the next day. That didn't fix the problem, so we had a technician there who replaced mobo, CPU, fan, PSU two days later. That failed, so we have a whole new replacement machine 4 days later. Great stuff.

Man Dells motto seems to be "screw build quality, we will just have good warranties"
